Re: what rear end is this

Sounds vaguely familiar; like it could possibly be the casting # for the center housing section of a F-body 10-bolt.

Does it have 10 bolts?

Does it have a torque arm mount?

Those are easier ways to identify it than that casting #.

Re: what rear end is this

No; the chunk of cast iron keeps the same part # regardless of what gears happen to be inside it at the moment.

Only way to tell for sure is to take off the cover and look. You'd be doing that ANYWAY, if you were going to use it, to change the fluid; just go ahead and do it now.

On the front of the passenger side tube closer to the center section, there will be some numbers stamped into the tube. They are usually very hard to read. Those can tell you what the original diff came from and had in it.

The tube probably needs to be really clean to read the numbers.

You're not looking for RPO codes, you're looking for axle codes

Re: what rear end is this

its really a LOT easier to just pull of the cover, count the teeth and see if its open or posi. No scraping off crap and hoping the tube is not all rust slake and the numbers are long gone anyway. Even with all that work there is still no way to tell what gears or carrier may have found their way in to the housing over the last 20 odd years. just pull the cover, just takes a coupe minutes

Really.... it's too easy.

I just don't understand why people seem to think this is so hard or something? What am I missing? I can pull one of those covers in less time than it takes to post yet another "what gears do I have" post, and then fill the rear back up and put the cover back on in less time than it takes to post yet another post making yet more excuses about how it's so hard. And I'm a fairly fast typist, but I can still do the cover thing faster. I just don't see what the big deal is?

Re: what rear end is this

FWIW On any factory GM ring gear(have to remove the cover though) I have seen yet, it will have a series of numbers on the flat portion of the outer 'ring' on the ring gear. You will be looking for a two digit/two digit number such as 13:42. You simply take the bigger number and divide it by the smaller number. In this case 42 divided by 13 comes out to 3.230769, which would mean 3.23 gear ratio. That is alot easier than counting the teeth. HTH
