rebuild a diff! can you do itself????
hello
i have some problems with my diff!
and i will rebuild it by my self, only if that is possible!
i have heard it`s a bad job to do it by yourself!
but here in the netherlands is it very expensive to let it do!
must i need some special tools?
where can i buy best my diff repear kit!
i believe i have this GM 7.5 in / 7.625 in, 3.23:1 Ratio
but i`m not sure now
thanks Dennis

It's not too hard.
You need a dial indicator, and a "special" tool to hold the yoke still while you tighten the nut.

The parts in your link are right, if you have a 3 series carrier now (3.23 ratio or higher). If you have a 2 series carrier (3.08 ratio and lower), they will not work.

Re: rebuild a diff! can you do itself????
Why are you rebuilding it? Are you just changing bearings and whatnot?
Are you replacing the carrier? (the posi unit?).
Are you replacing gears?
What's the goal here?
You will also need a 5/16" SIX POINT box end wrench. No, not a 12 point, and no not a socket on a ratchet. This is crucial. You should be able to special order it at a nearby parts store (hopefully the tools available in the netherlands are about the same as here?).
Also a 1 1/4" socket as shown in sofa's picture. (or is it 1 1/8"?). That's a big sucker, mine is on a 3/4" drive, and I have an 18" T-bar, with a 4' snipe to move it. Your call there.
If you're replacing your axle tube bearings it's nice to have a bearing puller, the slide hammer type.

Re: rebuild a diff! can you do itself????
hello sonix
i wanna rebuild them because it make some time a hard noise
and i have some margin in the driving shaft(about 1/2 - 1 inch)
it`s leeking oil!
that`s why i wanna rebuild them!
i wanna make a compleet rebuild inside the diff
but here in the netherlands people tell me that the job critical is!
so don`t do it by yourself!
but i wanna try it by my self with the right information!
thanks dennis

Re: rebuild a diff! can you do itself????
Something is being lost in translation here.
The driveshaft has play? Like you can rotate it, and it wiggles? It should wiggle a bit, maybe 1/4" of rotation or so...
The rear end is leaking, from the pinion?
You can try, but usually if there is a leak, a seal won't save you. The metal is worn to the point where the seal will only band-aid the leak temporarily.
New gears or axle shafts might be needed.
