Tell me ITS NOT MY TRANS....Please
I finally moved my Firebird into better storage...( my Mom's garage) but, not quite. I pulled into the driveway and went to talk first.
When I finally got a chance to pull the car into the driveway it would not go into gear...NOT EVEN NEUTRAL...NO GEAR AT ALL!!!
I dont believe its the transmission. I rode 30 miles to my Moms with no problem. The car has been sitting basically all winter, and before I bought it maybe for a few years. Tell me this is a simple fix. I'm BLOCKING HER GARAGE DOOR!!!

If its auto, which i assume it is since you mentioned Neutral, I'd do a check on your tranny fluid level first thing. If its low add a little and see if she shakes any.

Still in panic mode, but I've called around and I've been told the it sounds like the trans cable linkage is broken or something. If so, how easy of a repair will this be? Can a first timer do this?

Try getting under the car, with the engine off of course, and see if you can move the shift lever on the transmission (where the shifter cable attaches to the trans) by hand. If you can, you are probably OK and its a problem with either the shifter, cable, or both. If the car is on a slight incline, the Park prawl might have some tension on it just from the weight of the car, so you may have to have someone push the car a little bit just to ease the tension (if its on the ground) or turn the rear wheels a little bit if they are up in the air.
How hard is it to change the cable? Couldn't say, my 3rd and 4thgen cars are both manuals, so I never had to deal with it. (My suggestion above comes from a problem me and a friend had with the C6 trans in his race car last summer with a similar issue).

thanks Adam, yeah it's on a slight incline, but it wont even shift into neutral I couldn't push it with 5 men. I hate getting under cars like this. So I should have someone shift the car while under neath to see if the linkage is attached? Right? btw, its an automatic 1984 firebird v6

I had a similar problem, one of the bolts that holds the shifter linkage in place fell out and would not allow the shift lever on the transmission a full range of travel.

I had the same problem with my 79 bronco. I left school frove home and was going to back in the driveway, put the shifter in reverse and it was still in drive. It turned out it was a $5++ plastic piece that broke holding the shifter arm to the trans. Feeew
