front pump
front pump
i bought a 700r4 trans with a shift kit put in, i bought it when the transmission in my t/a grenaded (after 21 years and 150,000 miles of service)....when i bought the shift kit the guy said that he suspected that there was something wrong with the front pump cuz after 2 days a driving with the new shift kit put in, the trans began throwing up fluid...he asked a mechanic and he said he thought it was the front pump, i just figured he didnt know what he was talking about so i bought it for 100 bucks (nota bad deal)
i put it in my car, and before starting it up and test driving it, i thought lets spin the back tires while its in neutral to see if it will spin if the trans is supposed to be that messed up. the tires moved, but there was a huge clunking sound coming from up around the front of the trans/back of the engine and we kidna diagnosed that we thought it was the front pump as well.
now the trans is on the ground again and we're thinking about taking it apart, but no one in my family has any trans tools...but could this problem be a front pump problem? or did the trans shop he brought this thing to do the shift kit wrong? i have 2 other 700r4's and i plan on trying to salvage them cuz both have somethign minorly wrong with them
thanks

Re: front pump
clunking might be the pump, or it could be that the torque converter isn't engaging the pump rotor properly, or it could be something in the converter.
Re: front pump
well that converter is theone thats in there now, and there was no clunking when i put it on the other trans....so i guess maybe it is just down to the pump...which wouldnt be bad to get that up and running with just one part
Re: front pump
well the front pump was removed today and my dad opened it up and there was nothign wrong with the front pump....which makes us think that its possibly just the torque converter
when i bought this tranny (with shift kit) the guy said that he drove it aroudn and it just started spitting up transmission fluid which has me a bit baffled aswell
