after the T5 swap

hello all

I swapped out the 7004r for a T5 in my 1990 IROC. The T5 is from a 1990 Camaro. This is by far the best mod I have done to-date. The car is total fun to drive now.

But there are a few details I have to get straight.

- the reverse backup light does not work
- the rear hatch switch does not lock out it will open the hatch anytime you press it (even on the hwy at 60mph )
- my speedo is off it reads higher than actual by about 10-15mph

I have no idea how to make the reverse back up light work. I think there is a receptacle for the switch in the tranny. Maybe run a wire off the bundle to the old shifter? Because of so many wires attached I did not know what to do with the old auto shifter so stripped it down and stuffed it in the console. The car/ECM thinks it is in park.

Q: Is there any FAQ that tells what do to with this unit and the pile of wires after the swap? What have others done?

Q: The speedo reads high. My IROC is a 5.7 with 3.23 gears. If the speedo is now reading high is the tranny telling me the drive/driven were originally for a 3.08 or 3.42 rear end?

thx in davance.

Re: after the T5 swap

is that a stock t5 u put behind the 5.7?...if so..it wont last..theres a reason they only put the auto behind the 5.7's..anyways good luck..im sure that car is monster fast now lol

Re: after the T5 swap

What I did for my reverse lights was run 2 wires to the switch on the tranny up through the shifter hole and connected to the wires for the reverse lights on the auto shifter harness.

I'll check my hatch release to see if it works normally, it should only activate when the parking brake is on when the engine is running.

my hatch only opens with the key, so i have to get out of the car, while driving 60mph, to open it .

Re: after the T5 swap

On the hatch release switch there is a yellow wire coming off of it. Connect the yellow wire to the tan/white wire coming off the parking brake switch. This wire only has power when the parking brake is on. This is how a stick car would have been wired from the factory, so you retain the stock saefty feature that GM engineered into the car.

This is what I did with my t56 swap and it only works when the park brake is engaged.

Also you can check the sticky in this board called "t-5 drive/driven gear" that should answer your question about speedo being off.

I took the consoel aparty and looked I have a purple wire going to the e-brake lockout mechanism.

I have a tan/white wire going to the hatch switch on the console.

Are these the two you connected? If so how did you do it? Did you tap the purple into a three way withthe hatch switch?

thx

Re: after the T5 swap

It's been a while since I did this but ,going off memory, there were 2 wires going to the hatch release a yellow one and a brown? one. There was a tan/white wire coming from a single blade connector on the bottom of the e-brake assembly. I then spliced the yellow one into the tan/white wire in a threeway connection.

You can take a test light and check which wire going to the switch has power and that will be the one you splice into the e-brake wire.

Re: after the T5 swap

I just tested mine (forgot about it the past couple of days) and it works like it is supposed to.
When the engine is running, the hatch release only activates when the parking brake is engaged.

I don't recall having to do any special wiring for that when I did my T5 swap.

I am not sure, but I am running a T5 program and I don't know if that would have any bearing on the hatch release.

Re: after the T5 swap

For the reverse lights there should be a "sensor" fowards the front of the case on the drivers side. That is for the reverse lights. On my 88 the green and blue wire i want to say were for the reverse light. The easy way to tell is to strip the 4 lighter gauge ones and see when the reverse lights come on with circuits made out of the combo. Just don't short the 2 hot wires together as it could blow a fuse. The 2 heavy gauge wires are normally the nuetral lock out for the starter. You can either wire them together to disable that feature or wire them to the switch on the clutch pedal like they would be in a stock vehicle. On my car they were yellow and purple as with every other 3rd gen I have looked at. The other pair of wires i left loose when I did my swap 2 years ago I just clipped them and put electrical tape over them to prevent shorting.

Thanks for the info about the reverse lights, I had been putting it off for a while now, but now that I have to get it inspected I need them so I finally wired them up using this info, so thanks.
