shifter cable keeps melting
well when the first one did i thought i may have been against the collector tube, wrong. i fixed the second one so there was no way for it to come in contact with the collector, it melted too.......can anyone think of where to buy some heat resistant cover for my shifter cable?

umm... i hate to say it but if your cable keeps melting, you are missing something. if routed correctly, there should be nothing even close to hot enough to melt your cable. i would review a haynes or chilton manual for a picture of where its supposed to be routed.

This may sound crazy, and I know it's a long shot, but is it possible your eng is getting it's ground thru the cable? If your eng ground cable isn't connected to the battery or body, it will be looking for another ground. When the starter is engaged, a large amount of current may be traveling thru the shifter cable.
Not sure what kind of exhaust your running, but mine comes nowhere near the shifter cable.

long tubes, nothing i can do about their proximity to the trans,..........they dont burn the cable in two, they just melt the plastic and make it where i cant get back into park, hasnt melted anything else, just the crappy b&m cable....... fgure wrap it in some kind of heat shielding stuff and should fix the problem, its open headers now so hooking up the exhuast should help getting the tempetures down some......but it still is hot under there, and i will have to drive it to the muffler shop
you stockish guys have it great, non of your stuff comes back and rears its ugly head

Re: shifter cable keeps melting
ahh.. now it makes sense.
possibly use that flexable heat shield material they use to wrap starters.. something like that clamped around the cable should offer enough protection to stop it from melting.
