completed rear axle swap
i swapped rear axles on my 89 RS 305. i now have a 3.23 limited slip diff installed. i cannot understand why GM ever used an open differential in any v8 camaro even a 305 tbi. the car drives much much better now it seems to really help the low speed launches. i also did a nice 2 wheel burnout just to try it out, lol. although i dont plan on doing burnouts regurally, it tends to burn up tires and lots of very expensive gas. open differentials suck and im glad its gone.
Re: completed rear axle swap
GM used the open diff rears because 90% of the buyers did not need a LSD. Also the LSD rear was ment to improve traction in poor weather conditions and not for burnouts.

Re: completed rear axle swap
In rainy conditions an open rear is safer for the 99% of the population who don't have a clue how to drive. Most don't know how to handle the back half of their car drifting out from behind them, which is exactly what happens if you give it too much pedal in the rain with a posi. This is why most of em got an open rear so they can just spin one tire and keep going straight.

Re: completed rear axle swap
yeah and try to move your car on snowy roads with an open axle...
I had a 84 buick regal with posi as daily drive once...good tires on it and I never had a problem in snow...whilst my 76 buick estate wagon with open axle was a pain to drive on snowy roads lol
and...I think a sporty car like a camaro deserves a posi!

Lets hope GM gets it right with the 5th gen,and sells them with LSD and no open diff.Doesn't matter if they are 6 or 8 cyl.

Re: completed rear axle swap
lets hope so. the lower end 6 cylinder model 5th is supposedly going to make more power than many of the 305's in our cars.
