help with 700r4 OD

heres the deal.
i have an 85 IROC with a 700r4 (who doesnt lol)
problem is, my 700r4 thinks its a th400, because it has no overdrive.
what happened was that the previous owner had it rebuilt by some shady mechanic, who ripped out the lower transmission harness in an attempt to make it better.

anyway, there is this solenoid that needs to be activated so that the pressure on the clutches can be relieved so that the tranny can go into OD, cause right now, when it hits OD speeds, it tries to engage two gears at once, and thats bad which means that i have to drive around in D, as opposed to OD, and with a 3.73 rear axle, thats no fun. 2700 rpms on the highway is too much.

does anyone know what i am talking about?
if so, where can i find this harness.
i realize that i could simply wire a manual switch, and put it in the dash, but i would like to do this correctly if at all possible.
thanks.

Re: help with 700r4 OD

if you don't have overdrive, it doesn't have anything to do with that wiring. the only thing that wiring is for is lock-up. that solenoid is for lock-up, not for shifting into overdrive.

plus, if i just paid $1800 dollars to get a tranny rebuilt and didn't have OD or lock-up, i would take it back to the person who built it and tell them to fix it.

Re: help with 700r4 OD

well its not the lockup solenoid though... at least i dont think so.
the guy said it wasnt.

i had the TV cable re-adjusted and OD works now, sometimes.
if i am at around 70, it will work for about 20 seconds or so then pop back out.
if im at lower speeds, then forget it.

so fed up with this mess

Re: help with 700r4 OD

well the way he did it was:
push cable all the way in, push the button, full throttle, push button.
something like that at least.
it agreed with what i read earlier.

turns out it IS the lockup solenoid wiring.
i REALLY hate this dumbass who built my tranny.
he claimed he couldnt get the wiring from gm and thats why he didnt put it in.
then he charged $1700 for the job and gave me a non-fully-working transmission in return.

that was after he had to admit he messed up and took it back into the shop when he must have "missed" the fact that there was no lockup the first time.

so now i am looking at a TCI aftermarket lockup that will completely bypass the computer (which is good in my case as the computer is probably worthless anyway because its been hacked into so poorly).
its like 80 bucks, but hopefully it will fix my problem.

what i WANT is a transmission that locks up in 3rd and 4th, and runs cool.
as of now, after 400 miles or so, the fluid is dark reddish brown, and that was starting with new fluid.
the tranny cooler should help a LOT and having lockup will too.
lets hope it isnt ruined though.
that would suck.
royally.

anybody know the kit i am speaking of?
its TCI 376600.

Re: help with 700r4 OD

From my experience alot of the smaller "shadetree" mechanics don't even understand what a lock-up TC is. No offense to any elders here , but people who work on older cars (like 2nd gens) look at things like lock-up TC's, CATS, and even fuel injection as being unnecessary, so they immediately start unhooking things. This may be best left to a professional tranny shop if you can't find someone qualified to work on it. Ask the mechanic to explain to you what a lock-up torque converter does. If they can't explain it, move on to another one.

Re: help with 700r4 OD

well after arguing with the guy for weeks i finally cracked him.
we went back and forth about the wiring harness and how he thought i needed to bring it to him before he could fix the car.
i was like, no, YOU ARE THE MECHANIC. i paid you the money, now FIX IT.

in the end, i said, you have two options, either fix the damn car or refund my money in FULL.
he refused to refund, so his only option was to fix it.

basically, i called his bluff and he had no choice.

ill let yall know what happens, but im about tired of this crap

edit:
a buddy of mine thinks that part of the problem might be the torque converter going bad.
i have no idea.
feedback?
