I have an 84 z28. The Car won't go forward or backward unless one wiggles the shifter and gives it gas (It also seems to slip in reverse when I get it going). I 'm guessing that linkage may be a problem or the transmission is shot. Any other possibilities?

If the transmission is shot, I am thinking that I would like to buy a used or rebuilt transmission over the internet (AAMCO and Cottman want huge sums for their work).

I seem to remember reading about length and/or some tooth count differences between older 700r4 transmissions and newer ones. What does that signify in my search for a transmission, do I need to stick to just the older ones or can I adapt the newer ones to my car?

What PITA am I looking at in pulling out one transmission and putting in the other (I do have the Haynes transmission book)?
