700R4 Lost 3rd and 4th Gears...
Got an '89 IROC with a stock (rebuilt) 350 TPI and original 700R4 transmission. I'd been noticing that around 40-45 MPH, the transmission seemed to shift randomly between 3rd and 4th gears, but it would be fine anywhere above that (it would stay in gear and wouldn't slip). Now, almost without warning, it started having trouble on a 2-3 upshift. When it's cold, there is a lot of slipping but it will be fine once it gets into 3rd. And when it's hot, it won't even shift into 3rd. It's like it drops into neutral after 2nd gear.
The 1-2 upshift is good and firm, and I have no problems taking off with the shifter set to any position. But 3rd and 4th aren't even trying anymore; they're just gone. I've had overdrive go bad on a 700R4 before, but I'm just surprised that 3rd seems to have gone without warning.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

Re: 700R4 Lost 3rd and 4th Gears...
I just drove my car for an hour back to my parents house last night so I could swap cars and work on the transmission some other time. Some more observations:
1. I got third gear back, but there was some obvious slippage when shifting
2. When I have third gear, I have overdrive/fourth gear
3. Towards the end of the drive, I noticed that the 1-2 shift had some slippage when shifting. This is the first time I've noticed that
I did some searches on the 3-4 clutch pack, but I just want to cover all of my bases. If it was the 3-4 clutch pack, would it be possible for me to sometimes be able to shift into 3rd/4th gears? Also, I would like to emphasize that once a gear has been shifted into, the car drives fine. I don't think the gears themselves are slipping; it's the shifting between them where I notice the problems. The fact that I'm starting to notice slipping on the 1-2 shift has me questioning the 3-4 clutch pack being the culprit.

hooptie: It was exactly what "Pro Built Automatics" said: 3-4 clutch pack was gone. Had to get the transmission rebuilt.

Yes, bump. My 3-4 clutch pack went up last year and cars been sitting. In the next two months I want to get her back on the road (Yes i know its alot of work but shes worth it).
I've called two places so far and they want $1700 to rebuild the transmission and that doesnt include anything internal (wtf does that even mean) all i know is to fix my issue would cost even more.
I've pulled my trans twice before (700r4) to replace the torque converter and the flywheel.
How hard would it be for me to just buy the parts myself and rebuild it (i also want to install a shift kit, hello probuilt)
i mean **** 1700 (more like 2k im sure) for a transmission from aamco with a 3 yr warranty i might as well just buy this:

Ohh this is just a stock 350 with 116,xxx miles on it. i might pull off the smog stuff since im tagging historic and put a straight pipe in for the cat but even still its not looking to make that much power so i could go with monsters $800 trans as well.

Go to https://www.700r4l60e.com/store/home.php?cat=19 This will give you some choices. Monster does not have a very good reputation, that might be why the big discount. All of my kits come with modified TransGo Shift kits.

Monster is also very new. That $800 trans he's talking about is a rebuild kit, not the trans itself. Monster's kit is built with the same parts as the Hughes HD 700R4. They list the exact same parts for both transmissions, except Hughes doesn't sell a rebuild kit. Hughes charges $2700 for a brand new trans.
I know they've been around for atleast 3 years lol.
on a more serious note:
I'm fairly certain it is the whole transmission because that is how they describe it and I don't see any side notes that say otherwise..
I would love to buy probuilt's trans (from what I've seen here you do very good work) but sadly I do not have the money for it...
After alot of thought I don't think I will rebuild this more because of time constraints then anything
I found this on craigslist and was wondering if anyway in va has heard anything about this company; really hoping this isnt one of those too good to be true things...

I bought a Monster stage 3 this past year, I've had a modified stock, a probuilt (started slipping between shifts above 5500rpm), and I can tell you so far this is the tightest, best, and quickest shifting tranny I have had to date. They have excellent customer service and I would recomend them to anyone. there are alot of guys on here who badmouth them, but when I ask if they have any personal experience it is always no. They say well my friend knows this guy, etc...

Ya in my opionion especially on those mid 80s 700R4 is to either have it rebuilt by a repudable shop who builds them bullet proof or get one from a later vehicle. I don't know why but the early to mid eighties 700R4 were mostly junk

Buell, I am curious as to how the transmission from TrannyKings works for ya? The prices are good! I don't really like the ghetto spray paint lettering on them, but it will be a laugh if I ever have to pull it again. I just replaced my motor and am now wondering about my tranny... got 260k miles on it.

Sadly I can not tell you how well the transmission works. My father kicked me out of my house on the first and all work on the iroc has come to a stop.
I hope that by summer time I will have a place of my own though and can start working on her again; she needs it lol
I can say this about TrannyKings though:
THE SERVICE WAS PHENOMENAL!!
Not only delivered on time but asked where I wanted the tranny put and carried it there for me. Also seemed very knowledgable about third gens and offered a ton of tips, probably talked to the guy for a good twenty to thirty mins after he dropped off the tranny.
If anyone does end up using one of their transmissions please let me know how it holds up (hopefully I'll be able to tell everyone its a great transmission later this year).
Sorry my response took so long but my only internet connection is thru my phone and I don't always get notifications right away
