Cooling a T-5? Adding a Dipstick?

I was wondering how you could hook up a tranny cooler on a t-5? Would it be worth the effort if it's possible? Was under there changing the clutch out and have been thinking about it since. How about the addition of a dipstick tube? Mine has what looks like one that is capped off from the factory, maybe a foot long.

You can run a trans cooler on a T5 but you will need to add a pump and some other mods. I don't think it is worth it, since you aren't going to be driving at max rpm for hours at a time.

It doesn't matter how you drive, you won't need it.

Re: Cooling a T-5? Adding a Dipstick?

Found this on another forum,

Prototype Testing Results:
Car warmed and driven for 25 minutes prior to start of test w/ cooling system off.

12 mile stretch of road used for test runs, repeated boosting and acceleration/deceleration. 9 runs per pass:

Temp prior to testing start - 117.8F
Test Run 1 w/ cooling system on: Peak Temp - 120.6F
Test Run 2 w/cooling system off: Peak Temp - 134.4F
Cool down driving w/cooling system on following run 2: 118.6 after 7 minutes (120.9 after 1 minute)

Doesn't seem worth it for the small gains in cooling.

Here are the parts used:
Tilton 2gph Oil/Differential Cooler Pump
Earls 10 pass oil cooler
-8 SuperStock Line
4 -8 hose ends
2 adapter fittings to attach to the transmission
2 angle fittings for in and out of the pump (-8 optional)

Re: Cooling a T-5? Adding a Dipstick?

Hot oil inside a manual transmission isn't going to hurt performance unless it's in extreme use such as a stock car running around a track for 2 hours or a heavy truck pulling a heavy load. Oil temperatures that get above 230* is when you need to start looking at a cooler.

Driving down the highway for 2 hours is not extreme use.

It would be with your engine running at heavy throttle.....

Thanks for the info zepher. I was just looking to maximize longevity. Looks like temp isn't much of a concern after all. Guess you learn something new everyday.

Even running in the Silver State Challenge won't be enough.

The gearbox neither knows nor cares how heavy your throttle is.
