Why does TCC engage when the engine's warm?
I assume the idea is, that when the engine's warm, the transmission is also warm. But why is the TCC lockup related to trans temperature?
Is this just to prevent the motor from stalling on a cold day?
Or, does something bbad happens if the trans fluid's cold and the TCC locks up?
I couldn't find anything that mentioned "why". Anyone have an idea?

If it locked up when the motor was colt it would probably (usually) bog it down and stall it out.
If it DIDN'T lock at all then the tranny would burn up QUICK!
700s can't run without lockup for more than about 20-30 miles unless it's ONLY at the strip (warm up, cool down, warm up, cool down). Even then it's a good idea to have a BIG A$$ cooler and to change the fluid after every race.

I'm not so sure about that. There are guys on here running 700R4s with non lockup converters, and they aren't grenading their trannies.

812, thanks for the info, good to know a cold engagement won't hurt the trans.
MrJ, those guys probably have larger trans coolers, like 812 eluded to...

I actually run the largest stacked-plate B&M cooler w/my 700's and also use a 180 4-port oil thermostat, too. Gets tranny temp up to operating temp (180) in Winter (or will never get hot enough all winter to get water vapor out!) and still keeps plenty cool in Summer. It has a 10% bypass too, so there is always at least 10% going to the cooler for air-bubble/flow reasons. Works really well in New England... Thermostat is in Summit catalog in Oil System section, or Cooling section, not sure. 1/2NPT model is one I use.

There you go again, wive's tales about burning up your TH700 if the TCC doesn't lock.
I've been running mine for 11k+ miles without a single lockup event (not by choice - just haven't figured out why yet). It had 123k on it when I got it. I don't run a cooler, but I do run synthetic ATF. I drive it daily, raced it Fridays throughout the summer, went on a 700+ mile round trip a couple of weekends ago. The tranny hasn't skipped a beat.
True, the car is basically stock. But, stop this blanket statement that the tranny will burn up if the TCC doesn't lock.
