Re: rear gear
Welcome to TGO. There's a difference between series two and series three carriers. A search will provide more info.

Re: rear gear
Your 2.73 carrier is a Series 2. Works fine up to 3.08. Any ratio with a higher number than that requires a Series 3 carrier.
You have 4 choices:
1) Swap the carrier AND the ring & pinion from the V6 car to yours (but I'm guessing the V6 car's carrier is an open diff, right?) Free, but you're left with a peg-leg
2) Buy a new Series 3 posi carrier to work with the 3.42 gears. This can be expensive if you buy a new carrier. Used ones can be picked up on Ebay. Just stay away from anything that says Eaton G80 or GovLok.
3) Buy a "thick" ring & pinion (I got mine from Randy's Ring & Pinion for $169) to fit your current Series 2 carrier. Obviously, this was my choice.
4) Buy a ring spacer to put on the back of your ring gear to make it thicker. I have heard serious horror stories about this and don't recommend it. One story even involved a death.
