T5 Help!

I have an 86 V6 T5. It started making noises recently. When I am shifting gears, clutch in, it will feel like it catches a synchro I geuss..... and wont want to go in. It also makes sort of like a groaning noise. Dont get me wrong, it will go in, but it will make that noise too. It doesnt do it ALL the time, but alot. Any ideas on what to check?!?! Thanks alot!

Probably start with the synchros.

Even simpler. Start with changing the fluid if you have never done it before. Since it is a Non WC T5 it probably uses some type of gear oil which lost its viscosity.

Changing the fluid sometimes can make the transmission feel brand new.

Change the fluid first.

Check the top loader alignment second.

If that does not work, check the blocker rings. (unfortunately you have to disassemble it).

Pep Boys, OH NO! Of all places, make sure you have the proper fluid in that transmission. If you have the wrong fluid in that trans it will 'cause those symptoms. If that does not resolve the problem, then you are going to have to drop the trans and service it.

Did they replace the pilot bushing when they did the clutch? If you pull the trans, reset the preload on the input shaft to 0.012. Check to see if the front of the case is leaking..this indicates that the case is stretching which is where most T-5 probs originate. The synchros on the non WC trannys are brass and pretty durable.
BTW, use synthetic ATF, gear oil will cause hard shifting once the trans warms up (ie after 1/2 hour on the highway)

Well, the tranny started this after highway use...alot of it. A 2.5 hour trip... I have done it up and back three times in the past week. Maybe its just because it got hot. Maybe?
