New Gears?

I'm looking for any helpful information that will help me determine what new gears to buy. I've been told its a good mod but it cuts down on gas milage(which dosn't bother me too much) What have you guys done? Postive and negative opions are welcomed.
Thanks

you've pretty much covered it. lower gears cut your milage and increase you engine rpm. OD trans helps lower the rpm on the road. 3:73 are no problem at all. i don't think 4:11 is bad with OD. i have 4:56 in mine, but i never drive it very far at a time, about a 1/4 mile or so.

Yeah, i think i'm pretty set on getting 3.73's cause i have a daily driver and i just have 2.77's now so i think that it will be a good mod. Would you recomend any brand. I'm swinging towards richmond.

Ok wait a second. If you have 2.77's now, then you're just about out of luck on new gears. The 2.77 is a 9-bolt ratio, and they dont make gears to replace 2.77's, only for 3.27's and 3.45's. You'll need to get a new rearend, preferably out of a 90-92 f-body, so you keep your better brakes and 28 spline axles. Or you can try to find an 89 3.27 or 3.45 rear end.

I'm still not sure if i have 2.77 gears or not. I have no way to know for sure as of now so i guess i'll just have to wait until i take a look at the axle spline. I hope i don't cause it's gonna be a pain in the butt if i gotta get all new housing. I'm gonna try and find out tomorrow.

count the bolts on the rear end cover, if its nine then you are SOL (like me).

Do you have a single cat or dual cats? Do you have your RPO code sheet in your glove box? Check it for a GW or a GU code, then put that code in the RPO decoder on this site. That will tell you what rear end gears your car came with. Also, get on the freeway, put your car in third gear (drive) and note what RPMs you are at, at 70 MPH. Then post your findings here and we can tell you what gears you have.
