Stock auto won't shift into second.

BTW- I just notice that I messed up my subject line, but it won't let me edit that. The gear it won't shift to is third.

I bought my car several months ago and after it had been home for a few days I noticed a small spot on the driveway. The trannsmission pan was seeping and a good tightening and some bloody knuckles fixed the problem. About three weeks ago I parked the car and didn't drive it for about two weeks. When I drove it again it shifted to first and second just fine, but when I got to third it tried to shift but seemed like it was in neutral. Like it was slipping. I brought it back home after about three miles of this. I checked and found that the dipstick had just a trace of fluid on the tip. I put two quarts of fluid in and the level came up to about three quarters. I'll be putting another quart in it tonight and trying it on my outer road again. Judging from what I've said what do you think I've done to the tranny and what can be done to fix it. Sorry this was so long and thanks in advance.

First, get a military CD that has TAPS on it, and play that to your tranny. lts gone. Had the same thing happen to mine. Cost almost $900 to rebuild.

PS Dont mean to spook you, but two weeks later, a lady pulled out in front of me and totalled my car.

So you don't think it will make a recovery with plenty of fuid back in it? Anyone know what might be wrong with it internally? I'd like to put in a six speed, but I don't have the money for that now. It would be nice if I could repair this one.

I would say it might work with just the fluid. but if the fluid was dark red you need a rebuild.

Well, l made sure to see the parts they replaced, and well, the clutches and all that were smooth. Which is not a good thing. They told me that age coupled w/ the heat of running w/o enough fluid burned the friction material off. There was also a wide, semi-circular band that l undertand has to do w/ 3-4 gear. lt was also stripped. Sounds a lot like what youre describing. If so, then no, fluid alone wont help.
Sorry.
