700R4 rebuild book ??
Do any of you guys know of a book or video that describes a complete rebuild for the 700R4...
I've never torn down a trans, but have done alot of engine work. Could this job be done by me?? I heard that these trans are not easy at all to work on, what do you guys think...

I picked up the Haynes "GM Transmission Overhaul" book for $15. It covers the TH-350/400/200-4R/700R4 transmissions.. and makes a rebuild look less like rocket science. The guy even shows you how you can get around buying some of the expensive tools. The rebuild doesn't look that complicated; it seems the hardest part is checking some clearances/tolerances (such as for the input shaft's final movement, determining if the case is scrap, etc) and the $$ involved if a major part (case, planetary gears) can't be salvaged.
I bet since you've done the engine work, you'd be fine. Oh he gives a picture-by-picture detail of the 700r4 rebuild, too. The second chapter even goes into the theory/operation of all automatic trannies.
Feel free to get the ATSG (Auto Trans Serv. Group) 700r4 manual, too. It has the same exact stuff the GM Service Manual has- but this ATSG one also has the Service Bulletins in the back. Find one here: http://transbuilder.com/store_atsg.html Order one by calling up http://www.naparts.com (it's cheaper).
[edit] Oh if you can't find the Haynes books locally, they have 'em at http://www.haynes.com . Go to "Haynes Publications", then "Techbooks". I think JC Whitney carries them too.
