For all of the DIYers w/ auto trans
Here is a blunt, step by step way to adjust your TV Cable. I see alot of people don't know what it is let alone how to adjust it. If you don't know jack about transmissions, please do not deviate from this procedure, or do anything else not mentioned.
Step one: Locate the TV Cable adjuster (see picture) If you don't have TPI, the Carb and TBI will have a similar looking cable.
Step two: Push the "D" shaped button all the way in to release the locking mechanism. You can't be a sis about it, you have to push hard.
Step three: Push the cable retainter all the way in untill it bottoms out. This must be done while the "D" button is still pushed in.
Step four: Rotate the throttle by hand untill the retainer ratchets out. Once again, don't be a sis about it, crank hard on the throttle. Also, don't do this from the accelerator pedal. You must do this from the actuall throttle.
Thats it. Don't do anything else. Don't pull on the cable for "one more click" because it doesn't prevent "WOT" like many people think.
I hope this clears some of the confusion up.

I whole-heartedly agree, this SHOULD be a Tech Article...hopefully people will start to read some of those articles. There are some great ones in there...and this is another example of a great one.

). One thing though, I (IIRC) think my 1984 GM Service manual (aka Helms) says to depress the accelerator and not use the throttle linkage (on the carb) to set the proper position.
I used to do it the method you described (still do), what do you think?

The Holley guy said that you need to do it via the peddle too... I will try it that way tonight, because the way you described (and I used to do it that way too!) is causeing my car to shift wrong.
Or at least I hope that is the problem following the carb swap...

Both ways will come very close to the same adjustment. My GM Service Manual says to use the linkage, not the pedal.
If a TV's been mis-adjusted for a very long time, when it returns to the "correct" adjustment, the tranny will act funny. I set my friend's Monte Carlo's (200-4R trans) TV cable by-the-book, since his tranny was shifting funny. Well on the test drive, it started really acting up, late shifts, banging into gear, etc! We went back to my house, and I put it back to where it was. (I thought I was going to be buying him a new trans... yipe!)
