3rd gen rear diff help!!

brought a rear diff with disc setup for my 82 firebird.......the guy said it is posi

Its a GM 10-bolt with disc on it the code on it says 6HS which according to www.fbodymotorsports.com is from a 1984 Camaro or trans am.

Code Ratio Year Locking
6HS 3.73 84 YES

the doubts I have is

I put the diff on Jack stands and rotated the yoke. Only one of the wheel hubs turn. then I tried rotating each of the hubs. each of them force the yoke to turn but not the other hub........So even though the code says locking , is there a chance that it is not ?

Any fool proof way to say what it actually is.??

Also comparing to my stock rear end, it doesnt have the mounts for attaching a rear sway bar. I thought all f-bodies had rear sway bars regardless.

Any way to fix that ?? what is it called so I can check with the local auto store.

I will try to post pictures tomorrow.

Any comments appriciated

Thanks

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

Some of the 7.5 rear ends came with the Governor Lock differential, which doesn't lock until one wheel starts to spin. There is only one way to be sure of what is in a rear end. Remove the cover and look inside. You CAN NOT be sure unless you do this.

Some of the 7.5 rear ends came with the Auburn posi, which wears out quickly. These act like a standard differential when they wear out.

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

You dont need connectors for a rear sway bar.......They attach to the body via endlinks, and bolt down to the axle using a clamp and some bolts. You should be able to take your sway bar off your old rear end, and attach it to the new rear end with no problem.

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

A locking diff is not a posi. As mentioned above, locking usually mean a gov lock diif. Although they work fine, they're not designed for high power and can easily be broken. The only way to know if it's a locking or open diff is to pull the cover and look inside.

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

Thanks for the info so far ..... here are some pictures.
Can I tell if this is a posi and if its a auburn or Govern lock ?

Also a question about the location of the calipers. The left one is on the diff cover side and the right one is on the yoke side, Compared to my IROC both calipers are on the diff cover side.... :?
Can I just unbolt it and put it on the right side ??

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

that is a locking rear. when you hit the gas both wheels will spin. i know that alot of these came on the s-10's and blazers. posi or limited slip's have a spring pack inside. i dont know about the caliper part of your question.

Normal with Delco-Moraine iron calipers, 82-88. PBR calipers, 89-92, are located on the back side.

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

That is the Governor Lock. It's made by Eaton and has been used in GM trucks from the mid 60s. They are not very durable, but will work well for stock applications. Most of the time the small gear on the governor will break and cause it to stop locking. It will act like a standard differential when that happens. They can be repaired, but you must have the special tool to disassemble it.

Is there a chance that this did not come out of a F-body ?? The code says its from a 84 Camaro /firebird and the guys who sold it said its was in a 89 that he parted out (He said nothing was stock in the car at all). Maybe the previous owner swaped it in from a truck ?

And how do I make sure its not brocken ?? Will the pop the car up and spin the wheel method say anything ?

Cool .... now that make sense.

Is it possible to take the 4 axle bolts out and swap right one to sit on the diff cover side ...... any issues or risk with that ? or should I just leave it alone ?

Just leave it how it is, those brakes work fine for stock stuff, they came like that after all, if you have a set of PBRs though, i would definatly put those on over the Iron ones, but as for switching them there fine where they are.

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

With the wheels off spin one axle as hard as you can. If it is working then it should lock. Watch the governor while you turn the axle and see if it spins. If it doesn't spin then it is broke.

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

I HAVE THE SAME REAR END. IT ALSO CAME OUT OF A 1984 Z 28. THE LIMITED SLIP ARE WEAK IT WILL WORK BUT CAN BREAK. I PUT AN ALBURN CARRIER THEY ARE STRONGER. ABOUT THE BRAKES LEAVE THEM ALONE THEY WOKK GREAT. IF YOU WONT CERAMIX PADS YOU CAN USE THE SAME PADS THAT FIT ON THE FRONT OF THIRD GENS .ALSO THE AXLE ARE 26 SPLIN.

Re: 3rd gen rear diff help!!

You have to use this tool to take it apart. You can't get it apart without this tool. Cost about $130 around 15 years ago.
