what is a good price for a rear end rebuild...was quoted $1200 (!!)

i am getting my rear end rebuilt in the spring. i am converting from an open rear with 2.73s to a limited slip with 3.73s, so i need everything replaced. i was quoted around 1200-1300 bucks for the following work..

* Auburn Pro Series differential
* Richmond Gears
* Installation Kit

labor, including a TOTAL rebuild, new everything. seals, bearings, everything. also, new u-joints and possibly getting my driveshaft rebalanced.

worth it or not? seems a little high. from my reasearch, i can get the differential for 400, the gears for 200, and the installation kit for like 130.

thats like 500 bucks in labor, which seems high. what do you guys think?

i am going to go over this week and ask him if i order the parts and bring them to him what they will charge. i think the price is so hight because i am getting boned on teh parts.

you can get the price for the parts from jegs catalog. i'd say labor is less then 3 hours for a professional shop.

You don't need to remove the rear for any of that, but it is easier to do with it removed.

Fellow 3rd gen'r here had the following done for $900 in September: New gears, Auburn posi, bearings, seals, and full welding of tubes. This was with the rear out of the car. Driveshaft work should only run ~$125-$150 (out of the car, that is. I've seen shops charge $100 for replacing u-joints because they had to R/R the driveshaft!).

Overall, it sounds close but perhaps a bit high.

I ran into the same problem a couple of months ago, and I found a 9 bolt with posi, discs, and 3.27 for $300. That's for the whole unit. I pulled the old one out, through it away, and installed the new one.

Just a though though.

I did the exact thing except I went with OEM gears to keep the noise down. They kept the rear end in the car and didn't mess with the drive shaft though. DTS did the work and they are the best in the state. Parts & Labor cost $900 w/ a two year warranty.

Damn! You threw it out? How big is your garbage can? Your garbage men must be championship weightlifters, eh? (I know what you meant, but it paints a funny picture!)

i still say the flat rate is less than 3 hours, or less than 200 dollars for labor. it doesn't take me much longer than that and i'm slow. last rear i did, 10 bolt posi cost

200 for richmond 4:56 gear set
100 dollars for install kit
20 dollars for mobil 1 lube and gm posi additive
20 dollars for axle seals, never replaced bearings
that leaves around 900 for labor that's over 13 hours at 65 an hour.

That is a good price for that type of work.

When I asked around for prices to rebuild, I got $300 for the gears, $400 for the posi, and that's with out the bearings. And my cousin has a truck sitting around that we call the "White Trash Truck" and I dumped the rear in there.
