Shift RPM

I got an easy question for you guys. At what RPM does your transmissions shift at WOT? I have an 89 Iroc. It had a factory 350 in it, but sometime in it's life it was replaced with a 1983 305. I just got the car on the road, and in preliminary testing she shifts on her own at 6 grand. The trans doesn't appear to have been messed with. What do you guys think?

6000 is really high for a 305, a stock L98 is supposed to shift @ about 5000. An 83 305 should probably shift at about 4500RPM.

Well, for me, WOT wouldn't shift me untill 7,000+ RPMs.

i own a 1986 IROC Camaro, with a 305 TPI "L98".

Someone had put spacers on my throttle valve cable. i took them off, and now i shift at around 6,600 at WOT. not sure about the 305 redline.

Thanks guys, I'm just wondering what they did to make it shift that high. I don't think an old 305 will last too long, with me turning her like that. I was just interested in what it was supposed to shift at.

305TPI is an LB9, the 350 is the L98. The 305 redline starts at 4500 and is dark red by 5000 on the lower output 305's like an '83. Adjust the detent cable by pulling it out towards the front of the car.

I don't think my 305 came out of an f-body. I had a friend check the numbers on it and he said it was a generic 83 car engine. Probably out of a sedan or something.

My 86 IROC with a TPI 305 would never shift above 4500 in drive, the trans in my 350 car shifts around 5500rpm. this can be changed by replacing or modifying the governor.

I had a TBI 305 that shifted at 6000 RPM under full throttle w/ just an open element. Before the open element it would shift somewhere in the 5000 RPM range. Now, my 327 revs to the moon!!!!!!!

I got a TCI Streetfighter and wuz dissapointed by the whimpy 4500 shift. But for some reason it gradually increased to 5800. Right where I want it! I'm not sure if its from "stretching in" the governor springs (I was about to change them to get the shift in the ballpark above)

You can change your shiftpoints by changing your weights/springs but I never followed up on it. The TV cable plays a smaller role in shift points but I think thats a quick-fix method and not the proper way to change it.

I would tell you were my Trans shifts but my tach is off right know. (new one is on the way) But it shifts from 1-2 at 37 and 2-3 at 71-72. I set mine according to this web sit and i haven't had any problems with it yet.
