If you have a plain-jane RS (and not a B4C) than you should have a 2.73 rear if it is an automatic, and a 3.08 rear if it is a 5-spd. Both the 2.73 and 3.08 rears use 2-series carriers. If the 3.42 gears you are buying are from a 4th gen, they should be 3-series gears. The take-off posi unit from SLP is a 3-series carrier so it will work with the 3.42 gears. Make sure when you buy the gears and posi that they are both 3-series, as some manufacturers make 3.42 gears that will work with a 2-series carrier.

the posi IS the carrier. So if you buy the SLP unit, your friends 3.42s will bolt right in.

Didn't 4th gens use a 8.5" ring and the 3rds used 7.5 (Except 9 bolts that used 7.75") rendering the 4th gen gears impossible to install in a '91 camaro?

Depends on the shop. Call around and ask. Dont forget you'll need to change the speedo gears in your trans for the new ratio. Search this board or check the FAQ for which ones you need.
