Tranny swap.

I have a 700r4 on my 305, andit is on its last legs. I have another transmission on my 2.8 that runs fine. I am not sure what it is, but it came with the car. The question is, would it be possible to switch the two trannys, and would the v-6 hold up with a 305 instead of a 6? thanks

V8 and V6 transmissions are not interchangeable.

The trannys have different bellhousings and are therefore not interchangeable.

So is there no way to switch bellhousings?

No, but the internals of the V6 700-r4 can
be put into a V8 700-r4 case. However, the V6
may have fewer clutch discs and lower torque
capacity as a result. Doing this is probably
not cost effective.

The V6 tranny has fewer splines on the input shaft as well. As Nordbert pointed out, you can go to the trouble of swapping out the input shaft (requires opening up the tranny) and the bellhousing to wind up with an inferior weak tranny behind your V8. But it is definitely NOT recommended.

Thanks for all the help. Maybe I'll just try to go the junk yard and find a decent v-8. What is the best way to find if the tranny is any good or not?
