Park Ball

My 700r4 won't go into park. Actually, it will, but it is just like neutral. When I bought it the guy said it was missing the park ball. I hate using my ebrake and a block of wood to park on hills. How hard is it to fix this problem? Thanks Alot

I think he probably said "park pawl". I'd have to check the book, but I don't think it's too hard to replace.

A tooth in a ratchet that engages the gear to keep it from moving.

It would require total tranny disassembly to replace the park pawl. It engeges the teeth on the outside or the reaction carrier(?). Basiclly you are out of luck.

Well dosent that just suck? Well, I better make sure my block of wood is always handy, because I have no desire to take my transmission apart! Would a v-6 tranny fit on the 305?

I think the park pawl can be replaced with
the trans in the car, but first you should
get your trans fluid and filter changed.
While the pan is off, check what is wrong with the park pawl *** 'y. On a TH350 there is
a cup plug holding the park pawl pin in place. The 700-r4 should be made in a similar way.

Sorry, but I don't have the money to buy it right now. I might later, but I am not for sure. If I do get it, I will definitely look you up. How much does it cost to get a new park pawl? Would there be something in My haynes manual possibly telling how one would replace the pawl? Thanks for all the Help.

The regular Haynes manual doesn't cover much with the auto trans besides removing it, resetting the TV cable, and changing fluid.

If you find the Haynes "GM Transmission Overhaul" manual (usually by the regular Haynes car manuals at parts stores), that will cover it. It's a great read, and gives a picture-by-picture rebuild of the 700r4. It also shows the TH-350, TH-400, and TH-200-4R being rebuilt.
