Tranny Help

Hello.
I just bought a 86 transam with a 5 speed tranny. It had a 305 in it with bad piston rings. I drove it for like 4 days, then had a motor shop drop in a 350(not sure hp rating, has torqer heads, not sure the other spec) It was a crate 350. But now when i drive it sometimes, when i am hallin *** from a light. When i go to shift from 2nd to 3rd the tranny smokes a lil bit out of the shifter boot. What can cause that? Shifting too late? Too much HP for tranny? Tranny needs rebuild?

Re: Tranny Help

I doubt it's the trans, unless it doesn't have any oil in it. I think it's coming from your engine and blowing on the exhaust at high rpm.

Re: Tranny Help

next time it happens give it a good wiff to see what it smells like, exhaust? burnt clutch disc? thatll be a dead give away. i also have a problem where for some reason it gets really warm around my shifter, and alot of hot air blowing from it. but the only thing i know about my situation is that its not the trans because its an automatic, so i know im not burnin clutch.

Check the boot for installation problem, tears, etc.

Re: Tranny Help

it's more likely that it's too much horsepower for the clutch... or you REALLY suck at driving a stick. I couldn't imagine smoke coming out of a transmission. You're the only one who can really tell where the smoke is coming from, like gurkgurkgurk said, by how it smells.
