There should be a spring under the pushbutton to hold it up and allow the shifter detents to function. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I
think you can remove the shift **** by
pushing down on the outer **** (not on the
pushbutton) A clip sits in a groove cut in the tube and the shift **** is pulled up
over the clip which digs into the **** and
keeps it fron sliding down the shifter tube.
The pushbutton is held onto a rectangular
plastic shaft which passes through the shift
tube by a spring clip which detents into a
hole in the rect. shaft. Barbs on the spring
clip dig into the pushbutton and hold it into
place. After the button and **** are removed,
you should be able to find the problem.
P.S. I could find no information on the
shifter in my 1983 Camaro Helm, inc. manual!!
