T5 jerking when driving

I just converted my car to a t5, and while driving around the car will sometimes jerk/buck when driving at lower speeds. When you start to give it gas, it will go away. The car has a brand new flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate also. Could it be a possibility that the clutch might need to be bled more or is it something else?

Sounds normal. Anyone who's driven a manual for any length of time has experienced it.

Re: T5 jerking when driving

>Step on the clutch! You need to disconnect the engine from the trans at very low speeds......The jerks mean that the engine's starting to "brake" the car....if you let this continue, you may stall the engine. When you go slow, you need to use the brake and/or the clutch to slow down!

Re: T5 jerking when driving

I dont think it is because im not stepping on the clutch because it will do it at times when the clutch shouldnt be in. And sometimes when this "jerking" happens you can hear somewhat of what I would call a whinning noise.

Re: T5 jerking when driving

I dont think its from being in too high of a gear because it only happens somtimes and not all of the time. It also will sometimes make a whinning sound when I have the clutch in when in moving and shifting to a lower gear.

Re: T5 jerking when driving

Well...it could be the alignment of the clutch...pilot bearing and inputshaft binding....or unclean flywheel causing slipping...is it a new flywheel or resurfaced? Could be a mild warping of flywheel surface...

Re: T5 jerking when driving

I switched from auto T5 and notice the same thing. I think it's "normal" assuming there are no actual problems with the tranny and rear axel.

Now, part of it is the age-old manual problem. When your are at slow speeds and give it a touch of gas you slide back in the seat a bit which lets off the gas and then you slide forward which gives it more gas and on and on...
Mostly noticed by drivers new to stick shifts. But it happens to everybody from time to time.

The rest of it I attribute to slack in the tranny and rear differential. The car gets accelerated by the motor and inertia basically out runs the motor and then falls back. Kinda like the example before but the slack in the gears is the reason. But it's when the two combine that it's really annoying (esp to my wife!)

The best thing I do to avoid it is to stay in a higher gear. This loads the entire drive train a little and keeps from over running and getting that back and forth feeling. That's why you don't get this phenomanon with an auto. There's always tension on all the gears via the torque converter.

Re: T5 jerking when driving

I dont really notice it in first that much, but it will happen in all of the gears. Could this problem be happening because my pilot bushing is sticking out about 1/8-1/4 of an inch from being in all the way? (thats as far as I could get it in)

Re: T5 jerking when driving

IIRC, the bushing is supposed to be flush or perhaps in just a bit.

Yeah, mine wasnt flush though. It was still out a little bit. Could this cause any damage?

Re: T5 jerking when driving

Perhaps the bushing has failed. This from an old post: "The bushings usually fail as a result of improper installation, either of the bushing into the crank, or the trans into the bushing; or lack of lube; or a bad extension housing bushing in the trans, which puts too much force on the bushing continuously."

Following is a pic of the bearing in place:

Might be worth taking a peek.

Re: T5 jerking when driving

just my 2 cents but i think your rear gears are to hi
what gear are you running if it was a 305 tbi with auto i could be as hi as 2:73 .you cant run a stick with lower than 3:08 and thats pushing it . had the same problem years ago in a chevelle with 2:73 's swaped out to 4 speed from a powerglide and it wouldnt even pull out in 1st gear . the muncie 21 1st gear wasnt enough.
i swaped the rear gear to a 3:73 and never did it again and drove like it should .
t5s have low 1st gear so of course you can pull out. but running when you should be in 3rd or 4th the final ratio to the wheels isnt enough and the engine cough's, in other words the wheel speed is faster than the engine speed so the car is pushing the engine instead of vise versa
as far as the pilot bushing if the trans bolted up its in far enough and the trans will push it in when you bolt it up its just like puting it in a press. find out what rear gears you have like i said 3:08 is the minumum 3:42 or 3:73
would be ideal for road use daily drivin .3:90 or 4:10 is getting up there but with over drive you could survive
