Anyone got a spare posi carrier
Anyone got a spare posi carrier
My 88 Sport Coupe has the 2.73 open. On a hard takeoff I peel too much then whel hop my way into backing off the throttle.
I want to go posi, but I don't know if my car is 26 or 28 spline.
I have thought about the problem a lot and i believe I have the cheapest solution(oh yeah money is an issue cause I am a dad supporting a family).
Soes anyone have a used but working 2 or 3 series posi differential from an early thirdgen 10 bolt rear laying around they want to sell cheap(3 series) or give to a good home(2 series).
I am in Charlotte. NC

Yours should be a 2-series carrier with 26 spline axles. If you're keeping the gears, all you need to do is get a Posi unit. You can get a Zexel Torsen take-off unit from SLP for cheap. I think it will work in your 2-series carrier.

See, that is the problem ... the Zexel-Torsen from SLP is for later 28 spline axles. Mine stand the best chance of being 26 spline axles so it will not work without me buying $300 worth of axles.
But this concept of when the 26 to 28 spline swap was made has so many wrong answers it is not even funny.
The manufacturers of ring/pinion gears list early-to-87, and 88-to-later for their ring/pinion sets.
Folks on this message board say 89 was the cutoff year. Some people say 87 was the cutoff year. Some people say the 28 spline axles were phased in over the 88 year. Some people say the 28 spline axles were phased in over the 89 year.
The truth seems to be mainly that there is no clear cutover date or even time frame for 26-to-28 spline axles being phased in to production.
It comes down to "take off the cover and count" most of the time.
So, i figure I'll get a useless to most people 2 series 26 spline posi carrier.
Then when i open up my diff if i can count to 28 I'll call SLP and pass the 2 series 26 spline carrier on to someone else who wants it.
If i can only count to 26 I'll put in the 2 series carrier and order up some 3.2x or 3.4x gears for a later install and run the 2.73 gears, but at least with posi now.
Mike.

You can get an Auburn 2-series 26-spline posi unit from Jegs for $300...
For an 88 SC I'm 99% sure you have 26 spline axles.

I have a 89 and thought for shure I would have 28 spline axles> When I pulled one and couted it I had a 26 spline. I found a HD torsen posi on ebay and picked it up pretty cheap. Go to ebay and type posi in the search. I have seen some 26 spline posi carriers go pretty cheap.
Some 88s came with 28spline. I know because I took a 28 spline axle off one and have it in my garage right now!
Just yank out your axle and count the splines. I have a posi for 28spline I may sell. Not sure though.

I have a 26 spline posi carrier w/ 4.11 gears that appears to be in pretty good shape I could get rid of. E-mail and let me know if you might want it.

Mike, do you have the tools for and are good at setting up gears? If not, and you're keeping your current gears anyway, then perhaps the least expensive solution is to get a PowerTrax conversion unit. You still have to know how many splines your axles have, but the only cost would be the unit, a cover gasket (or RTV), and gear lube; since you don't disturb the carrier or pinion gear, no special tools or skills are required.
If you buy a carrier, even a used one, you'll have to pay someone to set up the gears on it. I've heard of people getting it done for less, but a trustworthy shop here quoted me $300 for labor alone. Even if it's only half that, you're probably still ahead with the PowerTrax.

who is charging you 300 bucks for axles? i did a 26 to 28 spline swap on my S10 and i paid $50 for a PAIR of axles. i know the parts guy, but if i didn't, it would have been around 100 to 125. these axles are used, though. i would get the slp and some 3.23 or 3.42 gears. mine has 3.42 gears with 27 inch tires and turns 2600 at 60 mph with no overdrive. you are right about the slp carrier, it holds 3.23 and up (numerically) gears.

I'm holding a 26 spline 2 series posi that should be in good shape. It has over 100k miles, but the majority of it is highway. The guy i got it off of was meticulous so he put in an auburn pro series when he went with 3.42s. It's got a 2.73 ring gear on it.
Anyhow, if you decide you want to go the posi route instead of locker, make me an offer. Also would help to check if you have 26 or 28 spliners, 88 was a transitional year.
