I'm having difficulty keeping engine fumes from the passenger area. I think I've narrowed it down to the shift boot area. It was missing several bolts that keep it secured to the tranny tunnel. I replaced the bolts but I'm still getting fumes. Am I missing a part? My set up consists of the rubber boot covering the hole, and then the leather boot. Is there a part I'm missing? It would seem that any fumes would collect up in the rubber boot, and seek out any opening. Also, funny enough, it only happens when a window is open. I think this creates a vacuum which pulls the fumes up and out. I know what you're thinking,... it's coming in from the window but I don't think so. I just don't see how that's possible at 60 MPH.

Fix the exhaust leak first.

 

For sure. I put it up on jacks and inspected all of the connections. "Y" pipe, cat, exhaust manifolds etc... Can't find where it's coming from. I also don't have the typical 'tic tic tic" sound, so it's been hard to track down. I'm assuming it's the "Y" pipe, so I'll take it off again and put in new seals.

 

my car does it also and my wife is about to kill be b/c of it. I cant hardly get her to ride with me b/c it makes your close stink. I also have no ex. leak.

 

The "tick tick tick" sound is because of an exhaust leak? I'll have to take a look for holes...

 

The "tick tick tick" sound usually means you have a bad exhaust manifold gasket or a loose manifold bolt. That's also the general area you would hear it. Sometimes it will clear up when it reaches normal operating temperatures. You probably wouldn't hear that particular sound past that specific area.

 

have someone block the tailpipes with a rag over their hand while the engines running and go underneath and listen for leaks

 

I looked today and I have a small hole in the bottom of the y-pipe and a small hole between the y-pipe and the cat. That's all I could find as far as holes. How should I fix those?

 

If you have a sturdy "Y" pipe you can get the holes spot welded.
