mosor 9" axles

ok so i just got the car done today and i drove it like 2 miles i was going about 50 mph and gave it full throttle and i could not get traction i was then going about 100 let off then got back into it then the axle broke in half looks like it got twisted into like a candy cane. should i go to the 35 spline axles and what is the price i am looking at to get the new spool for it i have the spool now i will sell but what is my best bet for axles? Were they 28 or 31 spline axles?

How much torque is your engine making? The Moser web site has an axle calculator to determine how big of an axle you need. My car only has 31 spline axles but with a powerglide, I don't have as much torque multiplication as a 3 speed and don't need to go larger even with the deep gears in the diff.

Based on your transmission and diff gears, you would need a whole lot more torque than me to need more than 31 spline axles.

Guessing at 600 pounds of torque
600 x 2.48 x 4.11 x .9 = 5504 pounds of torque.

One 31 spline axles can handle 7000 pounds. Even upping the engine torque to 700, that still only puts it at 6421 which is still within the limits of 31 spline axles.

Moser doesn't have a torque listing for 28 spline axles and if that's what you had, that's probably why they broke.

If you do go to 35 spline, you'll need new axles, carrier and center section. You can upgrade to 33 spline using the factory smaller sized center section but it will need the larger side bearings.

Was this a resplined axle? A resplined axle is much weaker than a stock axle and should only be used for street cars. What exactly was the axle?

the axles are mosor 28 splin and they were not re cut also so would my best bet be just to go with the 31 splins

Re: mosor 9" axles

31's will be more than enough and will be a lot easier and cheaper to switch up to.

Whenever someone mentions that they want to install a 9", I always recommend going to 31 spline axles. If they're making enough power where they need a 9", they might as well use 31 spline axles.

I've had Strange and Moser 31 spline axles and I think the Moser axles are far better.

Re: mosor 9" axles

If you go with 35 spline parts you will have to replace about everything except the housng. You will have to get a new case that takes the 3 1/4 inch bearings and all of the parts to go with it. the 31 spline axles might hold up, but who knows.

Do you have any problems with wheel hop? That will break axles pretty quick. I can't believe that this axle broke like that at 100 MPH. How much power are you making? Good thing you didn't have c clip axles!
