2004R or 700R4?

What transmission would be in a 305 4barrel LG4 camaro? Engine code H. How much horsepower can these auto transmissions handle?
Thanks

It's a 700r4. They generally handle around 400hp 450 ft lbs. '88 and later trans are stronger in the 3-4 clutch pack. Thats what these ratings are for although I chucked a couple with less power than that The stocker & a TCI's. In less than 2 yrs.

2004R will be better if your going to be running on the street or the 1/4.

There is a possibility of you having the TH-200. 83 the TH700 wasn't available. What year is your car.

Was the LG4 around in 83. I thought most of them were cease-fire injection.

Actually most of the Z28 camaros in 82 and 83 were the LG4's. The Cross-Fire injection didn't come in as many Z28s in 82 and 83, then of course the L69 came out the next year the CFI 305 wasn't available.

iroc22, I thought the 700r4 was available with the V8's in '83. No?

The V6's didn't get a 700r4 until '84.

Sorry I was wrong the TH700-R4 tranny was available in '83. It came with the Camaro V8, Caprice or Impala Diesel.

Actually '86 was when GM changed the 700R4!! They did it about halfway through the production of the '86 Firebirds and Camaros!! The '86 thirdgens made the first half of the production cycle had the "less reliable" 700R4 and the ones made the last half of the production cycle had the new, more reliable 700R4's!!

Just to clear that up!!

305 TPI
200,000+ miles (speedo/odometer non-funtional! Odometer reads 142,000)
4 Wheel Discs
9 bolt Borg Warner Rear (2.73's....oh joy) :P
Completely Stock
Soon to upgrade to a 350 converted from TPI to Carb, Edelbrock 750CFM Carb, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, Headman Shorty Headers, Some sort of ported heads (undecided), XE268 Cam, Moroso HEI ignition kit with external MSD Blaster II Coil and an MSD 6-AL Box!!
Current project: Keeping my 305 running until I get my income tax returns!

yup, they also changed the spline counts on the stator from 27 to 30, they also made different modifications to the valvebody. FYI, dont use a 27 spline trans for a racn' trans. they dont work well because of an extra checkball and other things

Speaking of checkballs, does anyone have a picture of where all the checkballs are supposed to go in the valvebody? I know some shift kits tell you to take one out or move it or something. How about a diagram of what the passages in the seperator plate are for? Like 3 clutch apply or whatnot. This would be invaluable info IMO.
