Okay, first off, I am planning on getting a 450hp 383 stroker crate engine for my formula. I am going to spray 150 shot on it, so I know my 700r4 stands no chance. Should I swap to a th350 or th400?

Here is another unusual question, I have an 84 cutlass with a 307, and it has a freshly rebuilt th350, can I stick my 700r4 in the cutlass (olds motor) and the 350 in my formula??

What is involved with putting a th350 or 400 in a thirdgen, I know I may need a diff. length driveshaft and I'll need a vac. mod. port for it, what about the crossmember and torque arm?

B&M makes a 700-r4 to th350 shift cable, which you'll need.

You'll need the 82 driveshaft and cross member, so I'd imagine you'd need a 82 torque arm too, but to be honest I'm not sure.

While this article has nothing to do with the swap, it's pretty interesting, check it out. http://www.g-body.org/tech/tranny/TH350_BP.html

Anyway hope some of that helps out...

I'm running a TH350. All you really need is a driveshaft out of an early Fbody with a TH200c (82 and maybe 83).

You can hunt around for a crossmember or just weld a small piece of plate steel (about 4" X 3" X 1/8"- 1/4") to the crosmember and drill a hole for the mount (it took me 20 minutes ot mock it up and weld it).

As for the torque arm, B&M makes an adapter that bolts to the tailhousing so you cna use your factory torque arm. Or it might be wise to take this chance to upgrade your torque arm (you're making 400+HP now) and get something like a Spohn.

If you want to throw your 700 in the olds you'll need to get a BOP adapter plate since the bell housing bolt pattern is different from a chevy. I'm not sure about the crossmember, and you'll probably need to have your driveshaft shortened a bit.

You know, you should be able to run your 700 behind that 383, if its built CORRECTLY it should stand up without a problem. The only down side to running a 700 as opposed to the TH350, 400, or a 2004R is the spread between first and second gear.

If you want an OD that has good ratios and will hold up look into a TH2004R. I've seen MANY hold up behind 500+HP GNs. Since you'll have to do most of the above mods anyway for the TH350.

I'm planning on buying a pro-built stage 3 transmission probably...

what's the difference between a th350 and a th400 anyway?

will the BOP pattern th-350 from the cutlass bolt to the chevy motor though?

super z, thanks but I prefer the auto. The car is going to be used mainly for bracket racing and auto's are more consistant..

You can easily get a rebuild on the 700R4 to withstand an extreme amount of torque. Plus you'll get the nice overdrive. Then you won't have to change a thing.

I know the 700 can be built to take abuse, and overdrive comes in handy if you drive your car on the highway, but I don't. I generally drive my car around on sundays and drive to the dragstrip and back. I want to go with whatever transmission will be best for drag strip performance, and I know the extreme 1-2 shift ratio on the 700's isn't it. I just want to know whether the 350 or the 400 would be better behind my motor, and why. I will be changing rear ends to match my combo too so the fact that I have 3.27's now can be ignored

Will that th350 even work? Is it a BOP pattern or a dual pattern chevy/BOP? If it's a dual pattern, I would at least put a shift kit in it. Some are made to shift soft. Was this a performance rebuilt th350?
Anyway, the the way I see it is that it's all about money. A 700r4 can be made to last in your car with enough dollars. A th350 is cheap to buy, cheap to rebuild, and strong. If you don't use overdrive, a th350 might be the way to go. Performance wise, both will perform about the same. With really deep gears, the 700r4 can be a little tricky to launch.
The th400 is bigger and takes more power to run(reducing you rear wheel power). It's not necessary at your projected powerlevel.

eh.. maybe I'll just buy a new 350 from pro-built (only 750 bucks!) and put the 700 in the olds and sell the old 350..
