Depends on the valve body. If it's a street car then get a good shift kit that allows you to hold the gears for as long as you want. You will want to go with a well known company such as transgo or B&M. Get one that has replacements springs, separator plate, everything. This way you have the option to throw it in Drive and go or bang through the gears and downshift on command.
I have a Transgo kit in my 350 and it will bark second. Don't know about third. I have 2.73s, no posi, and a Big Block though.

Just as long as you remember first gear is just off neutral and you need to pull the shifter back to go up the gears. To get back to neutral or reverse, you need to downshift through all the gears. If the shifter is bumped forward while driving, it will instantly drop down a gear no matter what speed you're driving.
Street cars don't need manual valve bodies. Manually shifting through the gears in traffic will become annoying quickly.

That's what I was saying. You get the same effect with a good shift kit...you can downshift and hold gears however you like but you retain the automatic feature. Just be sure to get a kit that has this provision...
Re: quick question full manuel VB?
Manual vb's are very hard on trans internals for street use. Very few(none for a 4l60) retain the TV function, thus full line pressure all the time. This causes excessive wear & tear on the pump and the planetaries(overly aggressive shifts at all rpm).
Don't get the junk B&M "kit". Transgo and Superior are the only real kits out there.
All that said, I've never understood the point of chirping gears everywhere. "hey, look at me, my suspension/tires don't work".
