1989 turbo ta,why 200 r4 and not 700 r4

is it because of the engine if not ,why didn't they put 200r4 in the 305 and 350 because the tta was producing more hp and tq

I think it's because of the engine. Don't quote me, but since the motors a buick they probably just carried the trans over with it.

Actually the 700r4 is stronger because if the larger input shaft. Although a 2004r would probably be stronger than an earlier mid 87 under 700r4 because of the wee sprags, decreased input spines and poor engineering in them.

The 700R4 has physically larger gears though too.

you don't see many 700r4's with the bop bolt pattern. i would guess gm had a bunch of extra bop 200r4's. what other cars used them in 89? not many.

The 700R-4 may be stronger but if I had a choice I would rather have the 200-4R in my car since the rpm drop is less between first and second. Not sure what the Turbo T/A ran stock but I bet if it had a 700-R4 in it it would of been slower. Does anybody know what tranny came stock in The Buick GNs and GNX?

The 200 was stock in those cars. Yes, i agree, the rpm drop between 1st and 2nd kinda sux in the 700. A little too steep for me. Does anyone know if someone carries different ratios for the 700? I'm in the middle of a rebuild and would change that if I could...

Contrary to popular opinion the 2004R is stronger, quicker, faster, and more reliable than the 700R4. True it has a 27 spline input shaft, but that is not the weak point. When you start to get some serious horsepower & torque the 700R4 will show its weak points in the form of, (1) twisted input shaft, (2) broken input drum, (3) broken sun shell, (4) sometimes twisted output shafts. The minor weak point on the 2004R is the input drum. Once you start to get past 650-675 horsepower the input drum shaft can start to twist. There are many mid 9 second Gran Nationals that are running 2004r's. The average life span of a mid 9 second 2004R is about 100 passes (when built right).
There are some mid 9 second 700R4's but not many. Besides, the lower first gear presents no advantages in most cases. In three seperate tests that I have seen or heard about the 2004R is about one mph faster and one tenth quicker in the quarter mile. It is not worth it to change from one transmission to another, but if you are going to put an overdrive in an older GM product the the 2004R is the way too go! This should help!!!
