Anyone know where to get an axle vent for the BW 9 bolt?

Re: BW 9 Bolt Axle Vent

I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure that they are the same as the vents used on the 8.8 Mustang rear ends.

Guessing, I'd say the 9- and 10-bolt have the same vent. GM p/n 1236317. Good number on GMPartsDirect.\

I have a 10 bolt in the garage and it looks like a press in type where as the 9 has a hex fitting.

The 10 bolt has a press in plastic vent. The 9 bolt has a screw in steel vent.

Interesting. I'm curious. Any reason why this is so?

The 9 bolt is built in Australia by Borg Warner. The 10 bolt is built here.

I understand that, but I'm still curious about the 'why?' Is there something about the 9-bolt that makes the difference necessary?

Re: BW 9 Bolt Axle Vent

No, it's just how Borg Warner builds them. The vent is in the axle tube, the way Ford does it. GM puts the vent in the center casting instead of the axle tube. Putting it in the casting actually makes it stronger. When you drill a hole in the axle tube it makes the tube weaker in that spot. I have seen 9 inch Ford axle tubes fail because of this. Many people will weld the hole shut in a 9 inch and relocate the vent.

Im parting out my 9 bolt as we speak, if its something i can pull off of my rear end your more than welcome to it. Seeing as there is no aftermarket for the 9 bolt it might be your best bet. But from the sounds of it it im not too sure if i can even take mine off.

Re: BW 9 Bolt Axle Vent

I checked the vents and the 9 bolt uses the same vent as the 8.8 Mustang rear end. They are exactly the same.

Re: BW 9 Bolt Axle Vent

Do you think one of the JEGS screw in vents will fit? they come in two sizes.
1/8 NPT and 1/4 NPT.
Also it seems like only one place sells the Mustang 8.8 vent (latemodelrestoration). Any ideas?

Re: BW 9 Bolt Axle Vent

I have a new Mustang vent on the shelf. Ford sells them. I can sell you the one that I have or give you the part number.
