HELP, I NEED HELP BAD!!!

I have an 86 Iroc-Z with an Automatic Transmission. When I start the car and try to move it (while it's in reverse or drive), it won't move, the weels don't move. I kept trying but nothing happened, I looked under the car and the driveshaft spins, so it can't be the transmission, does anyone know what the problem is. The last time I drove it before this happened, the car was jumping every time I accelerated and right before I got to my house it started jumping real bad. I think I broke something. I was told by my grandfather (retired mechanic) that it might have been the peice that connects to the universal joint breaking, what peice is this and where can I buy a new one, and how do I find out if this IS the broken part? Please help me, I HAVE to fix this problem by saturday.

Camaro84, You need to jack the car up, use some jack stands and check the drive shaft at the rear end. It sounds like either the rear end broke or the u-joints. If the u-joints are tight then the rear end is broken.

Sounds to me like the rear end is torn up.

Pop the differential cover off and look in there. Don't forget, the fluid will all come out when you do that, so have an oil drain pan or something like that ready to catch it.

Chances are, you'll be able to see exactly what's wrong.

I can't jack it up though. The car is on my grass on the curb at an angle. The car wont move so I can't move it into the street so it's strait and I can't jack it up on the curb becuase it would be at an angle which is EXTREMELY unsafe. What should I do? As far as the U-joint and the rear end, what does it cost to replace each?

If the car will not move then the rear end is broken. I think the price for the rear end replacement will be around 5 or 6 hundred dollars.

What is considered the "rear end". Wait, I think I remember what your talking about, I saw drag ones in a magazine. Do I have to replace the whole rear end or just the broken part. If I only have to replace the broken part, how do I find out what it is?

Look in your local classifieds. You can probrably get lucky and find a used rear from a thirdgen for about $150. It might not be posi, but it will work. If you can get the car to a place you can work on it, you can swap out the rear pretty easily if you have a jack and common tools. Do a search for "rear swap" and you'll find PLENTY!! Good luck!!

A complete used rear at the boneyard should be anywhere from $75-600, depending on what you will accept. If you'll take a reguar drum-brake, early model one, itwill be toward the low end.

Anything you do, you going to have to get the car to where you can jsck it up. Go to the hardware store and get about a 25' piece of the thickest rope they've got, at least ¾"; or one of the auto parts chain stores, and get a nylon tow strap. Use that and another car to move yours around to a flat place.

To find out what's broken, you need to pop the cover off. 10 ½" bolts and you're there. Usually it's REAL obvious. Depending on what's broke, it might be possible to replace just that piece or pieces, or it might be cheaper to get a whole other one. Go find out what's wrong and come back, no doubt somebody will know what to do.

OK, cool, I'll try to squirm my skinny little body under the car while it's still partly in the grass, I know I can fit under it, it's just a matter of whether I can remove the peice or do any work while I'm under it.
