need help removing rear axle!!please help.

my dad is trying to remove the rear driver's side axle of my brothers 4th gen ta. I am not sure if they are similar to a 3rd gen or not, but we need help. We cannot get the pin out (a huge silver pin) it will not come out for anything. Is there a trick? Please help quick because we just bought the car and we are dying to get it on the road.

it should be very similar to our 3rd gen the big pin should have a bolt holding it in then after removing the retaining bolt. rotate the diff so that the retaing hole is a way from you the take a punch and tap the pin out a little then turn the diff back toward you and you can use the hole in the large pin to pull it out.

Be careful, when you hit that pin if you are hiiting it into the housing. I was pulling a differential apart at a pick and pull one time and the pin wasa real stuck, anyway I hit it hard and it went too far. Couldn't rotate the differential anymore...good thing it was at p&p.

try sliding a small screw driver or something through the bolt hole and pull it out towards you.

Did the whole bolt come out or did it leave the non threaded part in the housing??

These break and you must remove the broken peice or you will beat on it all day and nothing will happen.

Ok, it is possible that the bolt had been broken off. It does look slightly rounded on the end, like it may be broken. My question now is how far does that bolt go through the pin? I might have part of the bolt in there still. How do i go about getting this bolt out? And one more question, will the pin slide out either way?

The pin comes out either way. It will (should slide out easily) It sounds like you broke the lock bolt. In that case you will probably have to take the carrier out and work on it on a bench.

Good luck

how will he get it out if the pin is still in there?

Do the threads on the bolt stop and the rest have a lowered smoth part? if so you may be able to us some picks to help the rest out

I am trying to use a magnet to get it out, but i am not having any luck. It looks like maybe half or more of the non-threaded part is stuck in there. We cannot figure out how to get it out.

I've used 2 dental picks and VERY carefully spun it out.

The bolt usually breaks and leaves 1 thread left and the unthreaded part in the case.

Whatever you do, do not damage the threads on the carrier, it will be impossible to get the pin out if the threads are boogered up.

I can usually get them out in a couple of minutes. (I've done at least a dozen of them )
