9 bolt 2:77 gear can i put 3:73 or 4:11 in this carrier?

I am new to thirdgen.org and have found lots of good info on here, thanks. I have owned something like 25 f-body's and just bought 26 my first firebird. I have a built 400sbc and 700r-4 trans, with a open 10 bolt. When i bought the car i was given a 9 bolt rear end with it, after opening it i found it was a posi as i was told but did not have the 3:73 i was told. I was wondering if this carrier can have 3:73 or 4:11 put in it? thanks

No, the 2.77 gear ratio uses a 2 series carrier. In Order to use the higher gear ratio's, you will need a 3 series carrier. It would bolt right in and you could reuse your axles and everything. I myself just picked up a spare 3 series carrier to rebuild and possible sell in the future.

think i will just sell this and build the 10 bolt. Looking into these 9 bolts they cost alot to build.

That is true, but not when I comes to building a 10 bolt. A 9 bolt is much stronger than a 10 bolt. I was looking to switch over as well but I researched it woud cost about $400 to get the 10 bolt as strong as the 9 bolt.

Maybe i will look around and see if i can find another one, but then all i can reuse is the posi right? what about the newer f-body rear ends 93 and newer? I have used the 10 bolts and not had problems. I know finding a 9 bolt with a series 3 carrier is going to be hard to find.

9bolt parts are hard to find since they are a lil different then the 10 bolts i've never seen some one find a set of gears aftermarket for them unless they have them out now

Fourthgen 10-bolts use the same parts as 90-92 thirdgen 10 bolts. They're not any stronger, and the fourthgen guys complain about them all the time.

82-89 10 bolts have 26 spline axles, while the 90+ have 28 spline axles. That adds a little strength but they're still weak, especially behind stick shifts.

Run what you have until the money is available for upgrade (9" or 12-bolt) about $2500.

Sell the 10 bolt, put some cash with it and get the 9 bolt regeared to 3.73.

There's no such thing as building a car on a budget while still making good horsepower. You'll break something and you wont have the money to fix it. If you cant afford to fix it, you cant afford to break it. Sorry man, but that's the cold hard truth.

you make no sense, if i did not have money for it i would not do it. I did not say i don't have the money, i said i am building it on a budget. You can build a car on a budget and have the money to fix it. I know i can go pay 10,000 for a good crate motor, but i can also pay 5,000 and build the same motor, thats doing it on a budget. what about save the money, build a stock rear that you pulled from the junkyard and not spend the big bucks for the aftermarket, that does not mean you don't have the money to fix your car. Just for the record its the love of the sport that keep people doing it, not because we have too much money and no place to put it. you sound like the guy that bought his car and not built it. I have no clue where the whole no money to fix it because you try to build a car on a budget. Think you mixed up biulding a car on a budget and building a car with no money.

Re: 9 bolt 2:77 gear can i put 3:73 or 4:11 in this carrier?

I have a couple 3 serise carriers. one with 3:27's and the other still in a housing only missing brakes. I'd be more than happy to get rid of either of them. I'm not a big fan of the 9 bolt, not saying they are bad........just odd. if your engine is relatively stock and you just want both tires to spin 10 bolts a lot cheaper. If you want strength you'd be better off saving your money and getting a 9 inch or 12 bolt.9 inch has the best gear selection and if you have more than one "hogs head" set up with different gears, fairly eazy to change. I.E. Week end play gears or I gotta go cross country in about 45 minutes.

9bolt.com has new and used series 3 carriers. or you can try Ebay. I got lucky and searched Borg Warner, to find mine.

My apologies then. This board is filled with people looking to get 1000 horsepower but only enough money to have 100 horsepower. I'm sorry I confused you with one of them.
For the record, my father and I have put 5 different engines, 3 transmissions, and 3 rear ends into my car in the last 10 years, using my own hands. I dont have any money to buy new either, its all been hand-me-downs from other guys in our club.
