Strange makes a case that allows the use of 12 bolt parts in a 9 inch Ford housing. They have been making this for many years. I haven't seen this one that you are talking about, but it is probably similar.

Watched Xtreme 4x4 yesterday. A 609 is becoming a very popular rear of choice for offroad applications. It takes the best atributes of the ford 9" and combines them with a dana 60 as well if i remember correctly. See if you can find that episode of Xtreme. He explained it very well.

Re: 609 ?

I can see where it would be good for off road. The 9 inch has a very low pinion and that causes problems with ground clearance and drive shaft angles. The Dana 60 has a much higher pinion, along with a larger ring gear diameter for more strength. The advantage for drag racers would be lower friction losses through gear contact and more strength. Who is making it, Strange or maybe Currie?

If i remember right i believe strange makes it. I could be mistaken though. And your right on the money. Ford 9" had a very low pinion and this rear has a relocated high pinion for more ground clearance.

Re: 609 ?

I think it was the third member that made it a true high pinion. It had nothing to do with the fact that it was a hybrid axle. You can put one of those in any 9". Currie makes them also

Re: 609 ?

They may be reffering to it as the "609", but unless it's something totally different, it doesn't use dana 60 parts. - There is a company manufacturing the "hi-9". That is what has become very popular in the 4x4 realm, especially rock crawling. They manufacture their own center-section, Strange is cutting the gears for them.

Yes, it is a 9" with the pinion moved to the top instead of the bottom. Since the stock 9" locates the pinion lower than a standard dana 60, the hi-9 actually locates the pinion higher than a hi-pinion 60, plus the steelhousing makes it much easier to attach link suspension systems to. That, plus it's known strength and aftermarket parts availability make it a great diff for the rock-crawlers.

Currie makes the high 9, but I think this is something different.

could be. I know that the hi-9 is what has become popular with the 4x4/rock crawling crowd.

That said, why not just use a dana 60? Equal strength, less power to turn. Unless you really need the ability to swap gear ratios often, I don't see any reason to loose more hp to the wheels. - Especially the S60 from strange which is basically the external architecture(sp?) of a 12-bolt with the internals of a 60. Thus not as heavy, but still very strong. edit: guess that's all kinda off topic anyway

Re: 609 ?

Some people might want to use the Dana 60 parts, but might already have a 9 inch housing under their car. This would allow them to run the Dana parts without having to rebuild the rear suspension. It would also allow them to build several chunks with different gear ratios for different track conditions. I don't see any advantage for a street car.
