Hello, new guy here with same old problems.
I've got an 85 camaro with a 305 and 700r4 trans that has sprung a leak. Seems to leak the most when it's parked, but I don't know for sure as I only got to drive it once before it started to leak
. Anyway, from position of the puddle and wetness on trans it seems the front seel is likely my culprit. Now I have to know what's involved in changing this out. I've read several other posts and heard several people give basically the same advice, but I was wondering if anyone had a complete list of all parts required or recommended
to replace when changing the seal? I'm thinking a seal, retainer, o-rings, pump bolt washers and a pan gasket and filter
along with the 3-4 quarts of fluid it's leaked out all over my garage/driveway. I've heard it's a good idea to replace the pump bushing as well as it can also cause a leaky seal. Is this something I can do myself or should I take it to a shop? If I need to go to a shop, what's a fair price for having a new bushing installed and would it just be easier more cost effective to have them do the whole seal?
Finally, I'm thinking about drag racing occasionally with this car and am wondering if it's worth rebuilding the trans or just switch to a TH350/400 instead. Will the 700 hold up to drag strip running say 20-30 passes a year (strip is 75 miles away, so not going more than once a month in good weather)? will run stock motor w/ headers, duals, open element filter, and maybe a 600/650 holley or rebuilt q-jet on stock ratio open rear and 255 firestone wide-oval street tires (not nearly fast enough for slicks or power adders).
