I own a Neon now....should i get a camaro??
first of all let me say i could not find a good place to post this i figured this would be the best place---
right now i have a 99 Dodge Neon R/T (4 cyl) and i seen an 87 Iroc-Z for sale for $2500. i am really thinking about selling my car and getting it. i dont know much about the car but this:
87 Iroc-Z
Auto trans
great inside of car and outside
from what i have heard it runs GREAT
what i want to know is are there any general problems to look for in this car (and no it is not T-tops). And is it posible to swap a 5spd or 6spd trans in it later cause i dont think i'll like the auto cause i like manuals. how much should i look to pay for the car and in turn how much would it cost to get the trans done (i can do the work) THANKS A LOT FOR YOU HELP
Mike (lives in Delaware)
ps my brother just bought his first car it is an 87 firebird v-6 manual trans i think he will like it

Yes, you can swap a T-5 (5 speed) or a T-56 (6 speed) in with more work involved with the latter. I gotta run, but I'll try to post again later.

I too agree on going with the IROC. can we say biased response?

I say, it depends on what you are interested in more. If you want performance, I'd say, hands down go with the IROC-Z. You won't dissapointed. The things handle probably better than anything you've ever driven before, and have the acceleration to match. A 5-spd or 6-spd can be swapped in for cheap and is fairly easy if you know what you're doing (there is a tech-section on this site and a technical article on how to do it). I also like the apperance of the IROC-Z Camaro over the Neon, but that's must my opinion.
If you want good gas Mileage, obviously go with the Neon.
If you want reliability....well that's a bit of a toss up. Technically, the Camaro IS a better built car and more reliable, but they get a bad rap because most owners beat the **** out of and don't take care of them, so the reliability go's to hell (as it would with any car). If you find a Camaro that's been treated well, it will treat you well in return.
I don't know too much about Neons, but my friend has one, he takes good care of it, doesn't put many miles on it, and the thing has a problem every other week.
Does this Car have a Carb, a 305TPI or a 350TPI? Either way, for $2500, it sounds like you're getting a good deal if it's in as good condition as you say it is.

Hey im in Dover too. Where is this IROC? I saw a white 87 not too long ago by kmart, is that the one your talking about? I say ditch your Neon, trust me you won't be dissapointed. The Tranny swap wont be too difficult provided you can find a donor for the swap, which sould possibly be difficult in this area. I've been looking for a 6 speed for about 5 months now. I've found one and the guy i talked to about it was an idiot. Good luck, and i'll look foward to seeing you around in your new IROC

yes it was the one in the k mart parking lot...as a matter of fact the only reason why he moved it was cause he got a call in the middle of the night saying that some girls boyfriend was drunk and was going to steal it!! I test drove it but again i dont like auto so that is the only thing i have against it. it has the 350 in it (isnt that the only engine that comes in them)
as far as being taken care of....this guy takes REALY good car of his cars...as a matter of fact my brother bought his 87 firebird (v-6 manual) that he was selling for 2 grand.
i still dont know if i should go with the IROC or not. it was fairly quick . maybe in like a week or two ill test drive it again. i dont know....the only reason i would want to get rid of my neon is because of the car payment and insurance. Believe it or not my insurance gets cut in half if i were to get the IROC and i am 20 years old!
does anybody else have any comments on the IROC and i do know all the answers are going to be biased!!

Well my first F-body was a POS but I lvoed it. Eventually I got rid of it because it was beyond help. After driving a $700 Cavalier for a few months and then a $50 (yes fifty) Garnd Marquis for a few more months (till i blew the rear :-) that was a fun car to beat on) i was ready to get a reliable, good gas milage car. until i came across my Z for sale. 60k miles, nearly flwaless in and out, aside from a dented fender. fell in love all over again and bought it. my point is, if you buy that iroc you wont regret it. It's reliable, and parts are cheap and available anywhere you go. When you feel the desire to mod it, you have excellent help here and a vast choice of manufacturers and products to make you go faster. When I bought my Z, I didnt know much about cars aside from tune-ups and brake jobs. Since then, I bought a 350, rebuilt the top end, dropped it in place of my 305, swapped trannys etc.. all w/ help of people on this site. Anyway, I'm rambling. Go for it! These cars are sweet and they will love you as long as you love them.

That thing is SWEET. you should definately buy it. You'll never look back at your Neon again. Oh by the way, the IROC's came w/ 305's too. Man if could afford to own yet another F-bod, that thing would be in my garage right now....

This is pretty much non-tech but I'll allow it for now.
Check the 8th digit of the VIN number. If its an 8, that means it the 350 TPI. If its an F, that is the 305 TPI. You can also check the rear bumper, it will say "5.7 Tuned Port Injection" for a 350 and "Tuned Port Injection" for a 305.

I have heard of camaro's lasting up to 250,000 miles. IF you take good care of the car it will last forever. I agree with whoever posted this above that the car gets a badrep because people beat on them and then call it a piece of ****. I love the look of the camaro. park the two cars side by side and look at them bith then decide which one looks good to you. As much as I love the idea of a new f-bodier(is that a word) We don't want to steer you wrong. It is your decision. Hope you end up with a nice car.
