How much can the 700R4 take?

is the a built-up 700R4 ok at 10, 11 second 1/4 miles? or would a special racing trans be necessary?

There's a guy in this months chevy high performance mag who goes for top speed and runs a 700R4 behind a big block and makes 179mph charges. (No lightweight car either!!!)

It depends on what you mean by "built up" a stock 700r4 is rated to take 370 foot-pounds of engine torque B&M rates theres 450, TPI rates theres at 500+ and I've heard that Houghes will go even higher. In any case, What kiils these tranys is heat, so if you are using it for performence get a good low restriction trans fluid cooler. The more power you have the better cooler you need. One word of caution, plumb the aux. cooler after the radiator cooler, it is possible to get the fluid too cold if you don't. The guy mentioned in the previous post was probably running a purpose built race car and may have had to rebuild that trany every few months. As far as making a 10 second car, I would not use the 700 for drag racing if you want it to last. You will have to rebuild it too ofen. If you don't mind that, it's great because it's got a steep first gear, otherwise, use a th400 or 350. If you are building a street rod, and don't try to run those 10 second ETs to often you will probably be ok.

I have several high 10 second and many 11 second 700R4's out there. Yes it does take some work to do this, but with the right combination of a (9.5" Vigilante or 10" Continental torque converter) and a 700R4 that is built correctly, then it is possible to get these results with some longevity.
Hope This Helps!!!

Hey Pro Built,

I'm running a slightly modified 700r4 behind my 383 (mid to upper 400s in torque). I'm putting a wider 2-4 band in it in a couple of weeks. What other parts would you recommend I upgrade while in there.

Here are some of the things already modified to the tranny:

TCI manual valve body
Larger servo
Larger boost spring?? in pump
Added clutches
B&M Trans Cooler
Precision Industries 2000 Stall convertor
couple other things I think but can't remember

Had a 13 vane pump in it, but went back to the 10 vane.

Any suggestions would help.

Thanks

Sparks a flyin'

Transmission: fixed the 700r4 again!
the trans that i had installed a couple of weeks ago is rated to handle anything under a 454 block . im sure it would have no problems in a 11 sec car. keep in mind though is expensive to get that type of trans.

bah if you running under 500 horsepower i wouldnt worry about it. my stock 700R4 (DEAD STOCK) runs behind a heavilly modded 355 with around 400 Horsepower, maybe 375 now since i changed the cam. it pulls real hard, has 100K original miles on it, and i beat on it every other day. My 4-speed borg warner however, rated @ 600+ horsepower in my red Iroc Z-28 camaro with it's 355 pushing 525 Horsepower blew up yesterday. it only had 2K miles on, good thing its under warranty. i hope.... now im thinking about putting a 700R4 in that car!! they are great trannys, great for street, and highway too. just make sure your cam isnt too big, i know for a fact those overdrive trannys dont like 230+ duration or alot of overlap, it kicks them in and out of overdrive alot.
