Clutch Issues - Throwout??

Hey guys... I wanted to run this by you to get some second opinions on what's going on here. I'm figuring it's the throwout bearing... but not positive.

First off, it's in need of bleeding. While I can't find any fluid leaking, there's no extra fluid in the reservoir.

The noise is the main thing that bothers me though... and yes I've searched quite a bit on it. When first starting the car, there's minimal noise from any pedal movement and the engagement of the clutch is pretty smooth. But once everything gets up to operating temps, when you press the clutch pedal there's a whine that sounds just like a power steering pump that's on its way out. It'll make the noise with so little as 1/2 movement on the pedal... all the way up to fully pressed.

Sound like a TO bearing to you guys or something else?? If I had the car with me, I'd just bleed it and double check... but I had to leave it at home while I head out of town for a bit for school... and with this an an intermittent electrical issue I decided to hold off on selling my old DD before this is figured out. I'll be up to work on it again within a week or two...

Thanks!

Re: Clutch Issues - Throwout??

Fresh fluid is now in the lines and the issue with the noise hasn't changed a bit. Does anyone have some confirmation from their experience with this sounding like a TO?? Something else?

More than likely, it probably is the throwout bearing. If it really only makes the noise when you start pushing the clutch pedal in, that's what I'd replace first.

Not a bad ideal to check or replace the pilot bearing since it's cheep but it's probably fine. If you hear the noise when you first start to depress the clutch than the clutch is still engauged and the pilot bearing should still be stationary. I'd say it's the throw out bearing.

Re: Clutch Issues - Throwout??

I hate coming across threads that were never resolved... so here it is.

Throw out bearing was a bit dead... but the biggest issue was a bent input shaft I'm assuming from a previous install, and because of that, there was really no Pilot ANYTHING to be seen - no bushing, bearing... nothing. I'd say that'll give ya some rough disengagement! Clutch hydraulics were rough too and under spec for travel, which added to wear, but the main issue was the input shaft. Trans wound up freezing up too... I've yet to crack it open to see what the deal is... but it's shot for now.

Hey Josh. Glad to see you finally figured out what was going on, and it was interesting to hear what the problem ended up being! That's definitely a hard one for us internet geeks to help you diagnose. That's one of those rare problems that you'd have to be there physically looking at everything to figure it out. Thanks for reporting back and good luck getting her straightened out!

Ya... that one definitely couldn't be diagnosed without pulling it all off. Once it was off it was obvious... but I had just figured I'd post up to see if anyone else had something else that was showing the same symptoms. Regardless... glad it's sorted now!
