700r4 changes-what year?84 or 87

i am haveing a disagreement with someone abou the year the 700r4 was changed. are the 83 to 84 the same then 85 to 87, then 87 to 92? or is it just 83 to 86 and 87 to 92
input shaft to tc spline count is the main question, did the stock 86 700r4 have a 27 spline or a 30?

Around the middle of 1984 they went from 27 to 30 spline. The 27 splines were not really that weak as most people say. I have never seen a 27-spline break, but I have seen 30-splines break. When setup correctly they both should work ok.
Hope This Helps!!!

I HAVE seen a lot of 27 spline shafts break. I have also used early setups on my own stuff with no problem. Given a choice I would use the 30.

It was 1988 that the late valve body began to come into use. The 1987 still used the early type valve body (1982-1986).
Hope This Helps!!!

Ok, now I am confused. The FAQ section indicates that 87 was the year of the valve body change. I have also read this in other locations. Now I am going to have to look at the pan to be sure.

Pro Built is mostly correct. 1987 was the transitional year for the new style case and valvebody. You will have to know the Julian date that the tranny was built to know w/o pulling the pan off. ProBuilt is correct, because 1988 was the first FULL YEAR of production for this style. If need be, I can post the Julian date of the changeover. I own the official "GM 4L60/4L60-E Interchange Manual". Unfortunatly, it only goes from mid '86 to '97.

OK, to further expand on what I said, the auxillary valvebody was installed on 700s starting on 279 of 1986 (October 6, 1986) but since the production run started on July 1, 1986, and ended on June 1 1987, that means GM made non-aux valvbody 700s for 3 months in '87, so there are a few out there.
