Enabling reverse lockout on T56..
Guys, need some help here.
I know most of you just leave the damn thing alone and muscle the tranny into reverse.
Unfortunately I can't do that, since I've had enough arm problems and don't wish to give them any excuse to act up again.
Has anyone given any thought to making the enable functional, like how it actually is on the 4thgens? Because I have, and I'm trying trying to figure out where you'd get a signal that tells you when to lockout and when not to.

Hook it up to your clutch pedal or the brake pedal.
That way you can only shift to reverse when you're on the clutch, or when you're on the brake.

Is there like a solenoid or something in the transmission that tries to prevent going into reverse?? I've never heard of this before? I'm going to put this tranny in my auto bird and I'm trying to avoid as many surprises as possible. Is it just a two wire connector that comes out of the transmission?

Yes, its a solenoid that keeps you from shifting into reverse when you're travelling forward. On 4th gens, its connected to the computer, and the computer only lets you shift to reverse when you're travelling 5MPH or less. The solenoid is located right next to the shifter. You can hook it up permanently, or run it like I suggested above.

Hooking it up to the clutch doesn't accomplish a damn thing. I'm trying to avoid the situation of shifting 4th-to-R instead of 5th.
It'd be a lot easier if the T56 used the same shift pattern as the ZF6.

The T56 uses a reverse lockout solenoid that is operated by the 4th gen computer. The solenoid is located on the driver side of the tranny directly below the shifter base plate. You can purchase GM part# 12101857 for $10. This is the pigtail that plugs into the solenoid. You can use a Hurst T-handle with a momentary contact pushbutton switch ($30). http://www.jegs.com/images/products/...0003_large.jpg Wire this switch to a fused power source and to the reverse lockout solenoid. Pushing the button on the T-handle will activate the solenoid allowing you to shift into reverse.

Thanks man, but I do know how the lockout works on the 4th gens (I have one).
I've thought about the button idea, but I really don't like that. I'd far prefer it do it by itself.
Maybe I'll just whip up a quick circuit based on the frequency of the speed sensor output. Should be easy enough, though I was hoping the thirdgen ECM might have had a signal I could use. Ah well, c'est la vie.

Hook it up to the brake pedal then, like I said in addition to the clutch. Then you can only shift to reverse when you step on the brake. Thats a good thing, as you'd usually be on the brake anyway, right?

Dammit, I missed the part about the brake pedal!!!! Apparently I need new glasses, LOL.
Sorry Kevin, that's a great idea. Wish I'd actually SEEN it earlier!

Rig it to the cigarette lighter. That way you can oly shift into reverse while lighting a cigarette.
Or to the underhood light so you can only shift into reverse if the hood is up.
Or to the A/C compressor so you can only get reverse if the A/C's on!
Hey, you could build one HE11 of a booby-trap for the next owner of the car, ya know!?
Brake pedal sounds like a good solution to me.
