700 r4 problem
700 r4 problem
Heres the deal... I had my transmission rebuilt, I decided to put it back in the car myself. In the process i stripped out two of the bolts that hold the crossmember on(one on each side). I had to drive about 10 miles with it that way, didnt figure it was that big of a deal. Since then i only have 1st and reverse. When i shift into drive its fine till i get to the point were the tranny is going to shift then it cuts out, if i step back into the throttle it kicks back in. What im thinking is that the transmission shifted sideways enough that the governor gear got chewed up?? If that is the deal then how do i go about changing it??Any help would be appreceated.
DON'T HATE ME
I think you got a lousy rebuild.
The upshift is controlled by shift activator in the valve body of the tranny, more than the governor.
Governor controls/is helped by engine RPMS to control timing of upshift (weights on the thing).
I went thru 7 tranny "rebuilds".
My current one, lasted about 7 years of no fluid changes, I drove it until....
Finally it wouldn't upshift outta first.
Turns out no clutches for 1-2 shift. I had to "jump" 1 to 3, by going to 5K until it warmed up, then it shifted better.
You may have burnt the clutches. I'd say pull pan for metallic stuff.
Sorry, bummed for ya.

Sounds like the 2-4 band isn't applying. This could be from The 2-4 servo being messed up (internal leak) or a valve in the valve body. There are a few different valves in the valve body that can cause this. It is also possible that it is the governor. Something is must likely stuck, like the gavernor, or a shift valve, probably from a chunk of dirt or something in there.
The good news is, that if the rebiulder didn't screw up any of the clutches or the band, the transmission can stay in the car. The valve body can be dropped while in the car as can the servo, and the governor.
Good luck!

I don't think that the stripped bolts have anything to do with your problem. I would first readjust the TV cable. Skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas peddle while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all of the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it there. Now, with the peddle floored, press the D button and pull the cable back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas peddle all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again.
well thanks for the help guys, today i took it to the end of the driveway to get the mail and on the way back it decided to shift. So im thinkin that something was stuck in the valve or governor. Im gonna change the fluid and filter tomorrow. Thanks again
