Car: 1991 Hardtop RS
Engine: 406 Small block
Transmission: TH 350
Axle/Gears: custom fabbed 12 bolt posi, 4:11
tranny swap problems
So I have a 1991 RS with a 406 small block, carbed of course, and I swapped over from t-5 to a 700r this week. I didnt have a 400 flexplate so I used a 168 tooth 350 flexplate with a weight, the problem is with the starter now. Its spaced too far towards the converter with the weight on. So I am wondering how are people supposed to run these weights when they run into this kind of problem? Its just barely too far inward, enough the starter wont engage. If anyone has been in this situation please let me know something. And I got a disc rear out of an IROC, whats gonna happen if I try to use it with my drum PV? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I'm not quite understanding what you're saying, but I'll throw out the comon issues.
- 168 tooth flywheel(flexplate in this case) requires a starter for the 168 tooth. The big and small flywheels have a corresponding starter that either has the bolts in-lin on the snout or offset. .
- It does matter which side the flywheel bolts-up to. The ring gear is offset to one side of the flex plate and it does matter which direction it faces.
- Sometimes the starter has to be shimmed to align properly. GM didn't even get the deck hieghts even with each other, do you think all the starter surfaces are perfectly the right hieght? - This is a key note.
- There is no "350" flywheel with the weight. The later model flywheels do have the weight(although the motor is still internally balanced; the weight is due to the round crank flange) but they are a smaller bolt-circle and will not bolt-up. A flywheel that is the old style bolt pattern and has the weight is either from a 400 or a 454.

The rear disks will work, but not to their full potential. You'll get much better performance out of the disks with a proper PV! You might as well get the right PV while you have the brake system opened, right. No point in bleeding the system multimple times.
