Do I need a TC lockup Switch?

I just had my tranny rebuilt and was given a hydraulic TC, I was told that this way it will lock up on it's own or either it isn't the locking kind, I am not sure either way does anyone know whether I need a lockup switch or are hydraulic ones non lockup.,
Also how can you tell when the TC locks up.
