Re: posi trac help

Just swap out the complete rear. Less problems then trying to find a Limited Slip parts for yours.

Re: posi trac help

A new Eaton posi is $475. What gear ratio are you wanting? Do you want to keep the gears that you have now? If you do then all you need is a set of bearings and shims for the posi. If you want to change gears then you need an installation kit and gears.

Re: posi trac help

Unless you can determine the condition of seals, bearings etc.,
"just swap out the complete rear" can easily wind up being more expensive
than putting new components in yours.

Case in point.
My starting point was the 2.73-open, drum brakes, which was everything I didn't want.
Picked up a 3.23-posi disc, and started renovation. Both the clutch cones were cracked,
& Eaton indicates this carrier is non-servicable. To gain access to the cones required
removing the ring gear, which has left-handed bolts. (The rest of that story is somewhat
embarassing, so I'll leave it to your imagination.: o)
Suffice to say, for the original cost of $350, I got a housing, axles, & brake mounting
hardware.

And there are some alternatives available in carriers:

Good luck

Re: posi trac help

Editorial correction.

The "clutch cone" reference above is an Auborn product.

I posited the same question to "big gear head", and his response
was an EATON (clutch disc type I assume...) model. Since this
thread has gone in that direction, hopefully he'll weigh in here,
and expand the comments, like pros & cons of the various
options.

Re: posi trac help

The Eaton uses clutch plates that are replacable. There are at least 3 different clutch sets for the Eaton that have different uses. There are also 3 different preload spring sets for them.

The Auburn uses cones that run in a taper in the case. As you turn corners these cones rub against the inside of the taper, which wears on both. When it wears out it is trash. The cones can not be replaced and the case is shot too. Then you get to clean out the housnig and axle tubes because all of that metal is in the bottom of the housing.

Re: posi trac help

I think i much rather go with my original idea and replace the guts in the diff, rather that replacing the whole rear end. its alot more cost effective in every way. I talked to the guys that distribute and install eaton products but no one was able to help me with what will fit my car. apparently theres nothing that would work with my model car, 89, according to them. any coments on the matter?

Re: posi trac help

I can get you the parts for this. I don't know why nobody was able to help you. It shouldn't be a big deal.

Re: posi trac help

The picture is of an early Auburn from a 8 3/4 Chrysler, but the cones and taper are the same for all Auburns.
