Rebuilding 700r4

I just got my car back about a week ago from swapping in a stout 350, and was out cruising with some of my buddies when all of a sudden my tranny just gave out. So now Im taking my tranny to be beefed up in order to handle the new 350. Basically what needs to be done in order to have a reliable tranny that wont give out again. Im totally clueless when it comes to transmissions and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rebuilding 700r4

get a nice overhaul by someone you trust. Your make and model transmission is known to be a good one with upgrades, so don't give it away and install a lesser model. Again your year is one of the good ones.
I'd make sure it gets a beast reaction shell as they strip out easy.
a transgo hd2 shift kit
a complete master overhaul kit (all clutches, steels, band etc.) not brand specific just complete
a jr shift kit to rob the updated t.v. valve with return springs
new planet gears if it needs it
a jet servo(tci sells the same one-not the corvette style) it installs easy
a newly rebuilt torque converter
AGAIN MAKE SURE IT IS DONE BY SOMEONE YOU TRUST-hope that helps some, this stuff will complement your year nicely.

Re: Rebuilding 700r4

if its the old style pump you might want to build it with 10 or 13 vanes

Re: Rebuilding 700r4

is it cheaper to have them rebuilt or just by a probuilt one from like b&m or tci?

Re: Rebuilding 700r4

I went to all the local builders and asked if I provided all the parts what would he charge for labor

that way you get to put what you want in it like a subway sandwich

...depends on how much you like swapping transmissions out. B&M and TCI don't have a clue when it comes to 4l60's.

Unless someone has already swapped his trans he will already have a 10-vane pump which is just fine for most any build. If you're going to be turning the motor over 5600rpm often, then the 10-vane pump is still fine but needs the heavier slide spring(s) installed to maintain line pressure at the higher rpm.

Re: Rebuilding 700r4

when would you need a 13 vane pump

only asking because I got one and wanted to know if it was overkill

It's pretty much just over-kill. I haven't even used one yet, even in a couple NOS assisted cars that run solidly in the 10's turning rpm's north of 6500. - I know Dana has mentioned several cars that run 10's or better on a 10-vane.

Re: Rebuilding 700r4

a 13 vane probably is different thickness, be carefull!!!!!!!! don't just throw it in.. unless ordered correctly it will differ from your 10 vane.
basically all more vanes do is smooth out the pressure pulses because there are more vanes pushing the oil, seven vanes were a little erratic, 10 vanes seemed to be the fix, and 13 was for electronic 4l60e's probably because of all the sensors in the valve body should have a nice steady smooth diet of oil, and the low idles that are common nowadays to keep pressure. IMO don't think 13 vanes are a necessity in anything older, not even really overkill IMO.
